I just got off the phone with Linda at Penn Foster Career School. Penn Foster will not allow me to finish the Motorcycle Mechanic coursework unless I pay them an additional $75 since I went beyond (by a couple weeks) the 18-month time allotment. Never mind the fact that I was sick and unable to do any coursework for a period. The issue here is that I was totally paid up with a $20 credit showing on my account. Linda made it quite clear that I would not get a refund, nor would they allow me to finish my coursework unless I sent them an additional $55. I have four exams to take to get my diploma, which I was going to do today. However, I kept pressing the issue until I was advised that they would refund the $20, but I will have to wait twenty-seven days since I paid by check!!!

Anyone considering Penn Foster as a means to get an education should reconsider. I took the coursework merely for personal enrichment knowing that there was no way the education would be enough to get a job in "the real world." Still, I enjoyed the courses and found the materials adequate. What has upset me beyond measure, to the point of considering legal action, is their underhanded methods. Nowhere do they disclose how much it will be to extend. All it says is "I have 18 months to complete the course." I started the course around the second week of February, 2007. I was sick for several months and unable to continue, but really applied myself when I was able. The bottom line is I HAVE PAID $698 FOR NOTHING!!!

Be VERY careful if considering Penn Foster. Read everything and force them to disclose their "hidden fees," or you might end up paying for something you will never see.

By the way, but they get very nervous when you mention talking to an attorney. It seems they've have their share of legal problems.
