I am a student at the Job Corp Program in
Loring, Maine. I've had to deal with the hastle of waiting to get into my trade which is Cisco Systems.
The problems I had to deal with more or less have been with the higher ups here.
When I arrived I helped a student bring his luggage on a plane and spotted him 50 dollars to get luggage aboard a plane from Boston, MA to the airport in Maine.
I asked many of the RA's of how to reimburse me for my money. The recruiter in New Haven, CT by the name of Gene Woodcock told us to only bring $40.00 for food and nothing more towards the weight limit of the luggage.
I helped the student out and had to fight tooth and nail talking to various people. The reaction I got was that they weren't going to do a thing and stick me with a loss of $50.00
It took a week in a half to get reimbursed.
During that time of waiting I had two stories being told to me.
1. I wouldn't get my money baqck
2. The money would be coming to me
I got the money and that situation is solved.
But there many more problems with the center.
A student damaged the drop ceilings and punched hole in a sheetrock column. The next day more holes were made and a emergency meeting was held.
All the students were threatened by a female security officer to incure the cost of damage that was done by the person destroying the wing.
If I didn't witness it and a few other people didn't see it we shouldn't be punished for something we didn't do.
I am watching everything that is involved with the RA's and the little amount of money I make.
and will call Department Of Labor if any illegal activity happens.
All I wanted to do was get a certification for a trade and what I entered is more or less a low budget government hack job to scam people not only of their time and money but a way to get educated.
I will post up the names of the people involved in the incidence later this week.

This responce is to the Job Corps trainee in Maine. You chose to give your friend $50 for luggage overage. It was your friends job to ensure that she/he didnt go over the allowed weight limit. I know the Job Corps is a piece of work but you get what you went there for. Not all locations are the same some better some worse.
Joy, your location had some foul issues you had to deal with. No one should have to had put up with those conditions. To the person in Maine, if your biggest issue is about someone punching holes in the wall, pplease reflect on the conditions Joy had to put up with.

i never really had a bad time a job corps, granted , there was drug useage on site , as with right in the dorms, and some of the other people were kinda violent , but honestly what did you expect? its an alternative for kids who didnt cut it in highschool , my recruiter "mark schneider" also told me about the low number of caucasion people on site , which didnt deter me because im from pittsburgh to begin with .
the living conditions were ok in the male dorms, i arrived in 2004, right after they had there big renovation on the guys dorms. the food was ok , and everything was just as it was described to me(except for the swimming pool)you know what im talking about......they told us there was a swimming pool , then took us to the YMCA to get our swimming card thingy's lol
the teachers only paid attention to the students who cared about it , and as far as the alchoholic , i know what you mean , i was in manufacturing , right next door to the cabling class
my only complaint about PJCC is that , i never recieved mt HSD after i finished

I went to Pittsburgh Job Corps in 1192 or 93 and I completed my job training but I left soon after due to personal reasons. I recently started talking to a guy I was dating back then who also went there but he got kicked out. Anyhow, he told me that he received a check from them and asked if I did which I did not. So, I just called records department and left a message about vthat and waiting to be contacted. If $ is due to me then I want it. Also, when I was there the teachers were all decent but they must of left and new ones came on. That place was basically nothing but a party when I attended.

I am so sorry to hear of all the negative involvements you had to endure while at Job Corps. However, It would be interesting to know why was your stay so long, if the conditions were so terrible, as you stated? I have had major involvment with Job Corps for over ten years and it is a wonderful program for those who take advantage of it. A few points you need to understand is those young people or "idiots" as you stated were not born or breded into the Job Corps program. Just as yourself, they were all "volunteers" which came from your area. Im sure in some cases they were given a second chance just as yourself! Some were successful and some were not" Hello, thats life!
It is also your duty as a young adult to investigate before you enter the program and leave if you don't feel comfortable. There are millions and millions of young adults who have successfully completed the program and proceeded on to college, advance training and even well paying jobs. Another question I would impose on you is what did you do change or correct the concerns you saw.
Understand that this is a free government program that will house, feed, cloth, educate and pay you to obtain a career, it's not the Marriot! Find another program with these qualities and let me know. Stop living inside a stereotypical world and open your eyes, times are changing and people are changing, there is no "perfect world". Im sure if you would have placed all of those student on any Ivy league campus or university, in least than 2 months I gaurantee there would have been a change to the campus. Stop bashing the program and reach out to somone other than yourself!
The program is like the buffet, "only take what you like"! Im quite sure there were a lot of hard working people there that helped you through successfully. Its not thier job to baby sit adults, get with program! Your issues run much deeper than Job Corps buddy, I would like to encourage you to get some help!

This is for the person who has so much to say about what people need to take from job corps. You have abosolutely no place telling anyone how they should feel about the way that they were treated but the people at these job corps centers. I also am a graduate of the job corps program, I attended red rock job corps for electricity and I graduated with HONORS.... I held wing leader position, crew leader positions, and I was involved in student government, dispite all of my accomplishments my main focus while attending that center was to change the way the students were treated by the staff. This program being free gives not one person the right to treat you as a criminal. It gives them no right to treat you any less than a person who is trying to receive an education, THEY should be the ones encouraging you to succeed NOT the ones making it hard for you. I was successfull because I refused to let them stop me. But that doesnt mean that the abuse I received was justified... I guess anyone who needs a hand in life deserves to be treated like dirt
