Dear Readers,

I had sent one of my poems to Famous Poets Society for their free online contest. Hoping that I would win i was excited. I recieved a letter in the mail from them saying that i had been choosen by "Judging Committee" as a semifinalist. They also said that they liked my poem so much that they wanted to publish it into thier "most eminent anthology of the year!". Which was named 2001-A Poetic Odyssey, all they needed was my permission to be published. They said it would be a in a "large artbook format, luxuriously hardbound and gold-embossed, and beatifully illustrated by our noted Art Director Michael A. Anderson." But who was this letter from? The one and only Martha French (thier poetry editor)who I later found out does not exist. Yet still how is she writing??

The anthrology copies were only the special price of $20.00 each but the Deluxe Hardbound Edition for only $39.95 and extra copies for $30.00. A special didication add $10.00, Photograph of yourself $20.00, Illustration $20.00, Extra poems $25.00 each, Special Biograpy $20.00, PLAQUE $38.00. Wow that made me think are they interested in my writing or in SELLING and taking my money?

Of course the very curios person that I am i just HAD to research on them. Here listed are things that i found out:

-Martha French their Poetry Editor (who sent me the letter even though it seemed more like advertisement to sell things than a letter) does not exist
-EVERYONE who enters the contest recieves the same computer generated letter from Mark Schramm or Martha French
-www.famouspoets.com, www.freecontest.com, and friendlypoets.com's poetry submissions are all taken into Famous Poets Society free poetry contest. It is identical to the poetry scheme called "World of Poetry" in the 80's.
-the above website are registered to a John Campbell or John Cambell (i looked it up in www.networksolutions.com)and they all have the same adress yet different email adresses to contact this John guy.
-Famous Poets society has done business under 12 names and 13 different adresses.
-A NEW adress 105 W. Valley View Rd., Suite 4 Talent, Oregon 97540

So in conclusion all of the above is something that i am happy i found out and hopefully you will to do some research of your own and not get caught into thier scam!

Broken Trust, I was told nothing but lies

I am one of many who trusted this company, and was told nothing but lies.I have on my wall a certificate reconzing me as a "famous poet for 1995".I have just recently found out that it has all been nothing but a lie.

I would like to know,as I'm sure others would, just what happened to the poem I sent in?This has been one of the biggest let downs I've had in my journey to become a writer.

Company's such as these need to pay for what they have done to me and other unsuspecting writers. In this day and time it's hard enough to find anything postive to write about, then you have to deal with people like this that have nothing better to do than steal other peoples work.I think it's time to fight back.

If you have been ripped off by this company, join me to finally put a stop to this injustice.

United, let's take a stand and show them we're not going to be ignored. This is the time to take action. If you've been ripped off by this company send your name,t itle of your poem, and your story here on Rip-off Report.

Let's stop other's from being let down, and having their dreams shattered. Together we will bring a class action lawsuit against the person or persons respossible for this SCAM!

I too have been a victim of the famous poets society contest scam.

I entered a poem that my daughter had written about her recently deceased grandfather, we were all very excited that she was chosen to be published---I sent the required money for the book that it was to be published in along with a memory request and have not yet heard a thing although my check had been cashed in October. If there is anything that anyone can do to get this scumbag I would be forever grateful...I have not told my daughter about this yet because I don't want to upset her....but it looks like I may have to because she keeps asking me when she should get her book.

Another Notion

I too received letters saying I was a semifinalist. I was more gullible, as my entry was free. My poem, "A Notion", had won some prizes before, so I could believe I was a semifinalist. But not only did I buy the book, but I payed again because of an "error" that had been made, that was MY fault. Right. I was told to wait until April or later for the book. Since then, I have recieved no promised confirmation, no answer on the phone or Email, and their page has been erased. This Famous Poet's contest is a scam, and I warn against any further use of their sites.
