The calipers will ofter corrode and when the pads are replaced in a corroded caliper the pistons are pushed back in and later they can hang up on the corrosion and then will not release. Then the pads burn as the rotor warps and other fun things happen.
I am curious about OP's comment "the tires were slick but not bald" What is the difference? "Slick" sounds like "racing slick", i.e. there is no *useful* tread remaining. "Bald" is obvious.
"Tread" is the feature that gets the rain water out from under the tire contact patch so that you do not skid out of control in the rain. and use a tree to stop your truck.

I'm the wife, I was the one the above is talking about. I went in because I was having brake trouble. I was returning home from Panama City the night of the day I took it in. They told me I have warped rotors, cracked capliter(sp)and blocked hoses. I had asked them to rotate my tires for the trip home. Now keep in mind I just had new tires put on my truck 4 monthes ago. They told me they couldnt rotate them because two (including my spare) was bald. And on top of if all, I had a leaking differential seal.
I called hubby who told me to take it across the street to Goodyear. I had had FireStone give me a detail printout of everything they found wrong. I gave this to GoodYear. Goodyear found the following...
Rotors were indeed warped.
Calipters were froze up ,not cracked. Still needed to be replaced. And hose were blocked and had to be replaced.
He took all five tires off and showed me that nowhere was there balding. Two (front two) were slick but not balding by any means.
And the rear seal wasnt leaking...didnt even look like it was leaking.
Total with FireStone-$1,120.
Total with GoodYear-$592.
BEWARE! FireStone will take advange of lonely women!!
