On July 19, 2000, my 1994 Geo Tracker developed a loud whine in the transmission, and smoke was present when I came to a stop. I brought it in to AAMCO Transmissions in Saugus on July 20, 2000, (the following day). AAMCO informed me that the transmission fill plug was missing and the transmission was very low on fluid resulting in damage to the transmission. They advised me to go to the last place that serviced or checked the transmission. Upon checking through my records, I discovered that the last place that touched the transmission was Jiffy Lube in Canyon Country on March 24, 2000.

I went to Jiffy Lube for their ´´Signature Service´´ on that date and they checked all fluids (including transmission) and changed my oil. After leaving Jiffy Lube on March 24, 2000, I was on the highway and noticed an oily substance on my rear windshield. I pulled over and discovered that the fill plug in the rear differential was missing and the oil had leaked out.

Jiffy Lube responded quickly and fixed the problem, however, they did not properly secure the transmission fill plug at this time as well and it went undetected until July 19, 2000. This transmission was recently rebuilt on June 30, 1999, at AAMCO Transmissions in Saugus and was in perfect condition. On March 24, 2000, when Jiffy Lube checked the transmission fluid it was fine. They did point out an oil pan gasket leak that was not related to the transmission fluid, but did not indicate anything wrong with the transmission or the fluid level.

I have done everything Jiffy Lube has requested me to do, taking the truck to their transmission place on September 23, 2000, which verified that "yes" the plug had not been secured at the time of Jiffy Lube's "Signature Service". I feel it is Jiffy Lubes responsibility to pay for the repairs due on my 1994 Geo Tracker and reimburse me for rental car fees for the time I was without a usable vehicle (approx. $3,000). A quality control incident report was filed on August 9, 2000. This incident is still unresolved and there has been no response to my requests. My 1994 Geo Tracker is still in unusable condition.

It is now October and this truck has been out of commission since July. Jiffy Lube is a major corporation. I cannot believe the way they are handling this issue!

Bad apples

When visiting a franchise shop, the only thing you can rely on is their product line, unless you know the people that work there. Until you know them, you have to look and listen to what is going on in a shop before you decide to buy the shops' services. Also, you have to double check their work. For example, if you look into the shop and see that it is clean, organized, safe and the staff seems to get along in a coopertive and professional manner, your probably at a good shop.

Also, it is best to stay with your car where you can view what is going on. Finally, before leaving the parking lot, get out of your car and look under the hood and under the car for leaks or left over tools unless you witness this being done before you leave. No small business (like a JL franchise owner)is going to want to replace a motor or trans after days, weeks, or months of use.

In Jiffy Lube's Defense!

I am very sorry about the mishap of the rip off informant and I hope everything works out well for her. However;I have a very good relationship with my Jiffy Lube team in Merrillville, IN. The managers name is Mr. Joe Alvarez/Store#170. They all know me by name and my vehicle on sight. I appreciate this type of friendly customer service.

Mr. Joe Alvarez and the entire crew always goes the extra mile for myself and the other customers. His asst managers, Danny Frevert snd Jose Recio are very well capable of handling all customer needs in Mr. Alvarez's absence. That also goes for the pittman, Bruce Lott and the entire crew.

Though I feel you can go other places for a much less expensive oil change, it does not compare to the assistance and extensive knowledge of the crew beyond an oil change. And the additional top-offs makes it worth the extra money of a regular oil change also.

So my hat goes off to Mr. Alvarez and the crew. I think they deserve praise and a raise. Keep up the good work, we need more like you!

Thanks much,

They ripped me too

I went there for an oil change, and no matter how many times you tell them that all you want is an oil change, they keep pushing the sales pitches. So after going there a few times, I just got pissed at them. The last time I was there I was kinda rude and they got me for it too. They cut my washer fluid line in two places. God only knows what else they've done that'll turn up eventually. Don't go to Jiffy Lube....They will mess up your car. And if you do go there, don't be rude, or they'll get you.
