No ripoff here!

1) If B&N negogiated with the mall that they would be the only booksellers in the mall, that's their right. It has nothing to do with the Sherman Anti-trust act.

2) If the other booksellers were forced out by the mall management, when was their lease up? Did they have only a month to month lease? If it was long term and the mall forced them out early, then the booksellers have legal recourse against the mall owner. If it was month to month the mall owner could have forced them out for just about any reason whatsoever. That's the way it goes. I see plenty of businesses go out of business because the landlord wants to raise the rent skyhigh. So they leave, the owner puts the property on the market....where it sits for months unsold and unleased - so the owner went from having cash flow to none. oops!

3) The bookseller could always open up shop elsewhere and earn their customer's business. Not sure where B&N really competes - their books are usually priced at MSRP. CDs and videos above MSRP.

I don't know of any large bookstore that doesn't have a sodomite abominable section. The section glorifies sodomites - Genesis 13, 19; Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, 1Kings, Isaiah, Psalms, Proverbs, Romans 1, 1Corinthians 6, 1Timothy 1, 2Timothy 3, 2Peter, Jude 7, Revelation, etc, etc, etc! - and has even more lies than Pravda! Instead of refusing to patronize, customers continue to patronize those open sewers. It is pathetic.

We outnumber that disease ridden, child molesting, dirty, abominable group by a minimum of 49 to one. Yet we give them our business. This must cease if civilization is going to continue to exist.

Been here a long time and no follow up from the OP. Could this be possible, yeah I guess it could. Is it plausible, no not for me. If this was a court of law this wouldn't be here because it's all hearsay. The OP was told by a clerk of one of the bookstores that would have been told by the manager. Things can get very twisted very quickly passing between people. Wonder how it turned out?

I guess their only competition will be Borders. Honestly though, I almost never go to the Buckland Mall. As far as books and music go, I can always find it cheaper online somewhere. I will boycott the store out of principle, with glee.

This is just another case of the “guy with the most money wins”. The fault lies with this mall for biting at the bait of higher rental income that B & N surely dangled in front of them.

The problem with anti-monopoly laws in this case is that Barnes & Noble is not forcing this other bookseller out of business. Just forcing them to move.

Of course, B & N knows that moving will be expensive and time consuming for the other vendor and that leaving an established location will cause them to take a big hit. Not only an established location, but a prime location. Most of the time the smaller booksellers will just close down when something like this happens.

Keep filing complaints with the owners of the mall. It is probably a corporation, so good luck. Corporations are notoriously heartless which they have already proven in this case by stabbing long-time renters in the back for MORE MONEY! Judging from your report the deal is already done and it would be next to impossible to change anything now.

If you plan to boycott the mall, make sure that the owners/management of the mall know exactly why you are boycotting. If your other booksellers do move rather than close, be sure to keep patronizing them after their relocation.

There is no solution in law for human greed. Human greed is the biggest reason we need such a huge legal industry in the first place. Corporate greed turns greed into an art form.

The bigger a company gets, the worse employee satisfaction and customer service seem to get. Perhaps that will also happen to Barnes & Noble in the future. Then we will all patronize Borders or Books-A-Million instead.

As a side note, I am amused to see that you mention Microsoft in your header. Yes, MS nearly conquered the computing world. But, “the worm has turned” (I know, a horrible pun considering the events of the past two weeks). “Bigger” does not always guarantee “best”!

The basis of this complaint is that the smaller booksellers should be allowed to stay in the mall and try to compete if they choose to do so. If they decide it is not working, they could then CHOOSE to move on their own, not be FORCED out against their will.

No company in this country should be dictated to by another just because it is bigger. That is anti free-enterprise. Goes against the American grain.

Someone needs to tell Barnes & Noble that! B & N is not “looking out for the little guy” with these actions. B & N is selfishly looking out for itself! And the mall owners are looking out for themselves, as well!
