I am so sorry to hear about the exorbitant 'additional charges' on your rental. I don't know if this would apply in your case, but, since you mentioned not having taken any upgrades, add-ons, etc., there is a possibility that the additional charges could have been in federal taxes and concession fees that are levied on all car rentals from airport locations - especially airports with commercial airline service. These fees are assessed at varying percentages, depending on the airport.
As a Customer Service Rep for a national car rental company here in Salem, OR, I check in many cars that were rented in Portland, Seattle, etc., and deal with annoyed and irate customers because their rental is 25-30% more than they had been quoted, or expected to pay. There are also Vehicle License fees, Recovery fees, and several others that people don't notice when signing for their rental. Luckily, we don't have commercial air service in Salem, so I don't have to add these charges onto rentals, but one thing that is very important to me, as a CSR, is to make sure that every one of my customers understand the charges, authorizations, etc. on their contracts, BEFORE they sign.
I hope that you can get some resolution for your situation.

Reading this rip off report makes me think that this former Dollar Rent A Car customer believes that the government and the airports magically pay for themselves!!!!! As the previous response noted there are tons of state taxes, local taxes, airport fees, licensing fees, concession charges, garaging fees, etc., involved in renting cars from the airport.
The "BASE RATE" is the daily and/or weekly rate times the number of days the customer will have the vehicle... it's that simple. Has this person ever heard of a subtotal? I don't think so! I work at Dollar at CMH (Port Columbus Int'l). We have one of the lower taxes amongst airports and our taxes are close to 20% of the total bill.
To make a long story short...
DON'T BASH THE COMPANY FOR SOMETHING IT CAN'T CONTROL!!!
