Back in March 07, my laptop broke and needed repair. Unfortunately, I came upon LaptopReady.com who had a local office nearby. I took the laptop in along with its power supply and told them of the problem. They shipped the unit off to their facility in Florida. Despite their website claims that they could turn around a repair in 6 days because of their massive inventory of spare parts, the laptop was not ready in 6 days. It was not ready in two weeks, four weeks or even two months!

I started getting concerned in May when they had not contacted me. They charged the full amount to my VISA but they provided no service. I called and they told me that they were waiting on parts and that the laptop would be ready the following Monday. I called back Monday and got the same run around by someone who barely speaks English. I called back the following week and got the same lie.

By mid-June I was fed up with the blatant lies and the complete lack of service and attempted to speak with a manager. I needed to call 10 times in a single day. It seems the people there aren't competent enough to know how to answer a phone. If anyone answers at all, you are likely to be disconnected in less than 15 seconds. (They are probably trying to hide from those customers are still looking for their laptops.) They informed me that my laptop was fixed and that it had been shipped back to the Sandy Spring store. I should have it by Wednesday, Friday at the latest. Not hearing from them, as usual, I called the Sandy Spring store. They started out with the usual lie of having it available next Monday. I explained that I had spoken with the Florida folks and that it had been shipped to Sandy Spring. I was told, in broken English, to call back later. I called back later and they said they had confirmed that the laptop was shipped and that I should have it by Friday. Of course, Friday came and went; no laptop. I called the Sandy Spring store on Monday. Of course there was no one there to answer the phone, or at least nobody who knew how to answer a phone. The call eventually was transferred to the Florida office again. After being on hold a long time, I was eventually connected to a liar named Hernando Hue. He put me on hold and eventually disconnected the call. Par for the course. When I called back, he told me that the laptop was not fixed and that it had not been shipped to Sandy Spring, like the other liars had assured me.

I demanded my money back and the laptop back. The liar promised me that he'd call me the following day with the tracking number for the shipment. The next day, of course, the liar did not call me with the tracking information. I had to endure several more phone calls, being cut off, having no answer, etc., before being connected to the liar Hernando again. This time he gave me a tracking number and assured me that the refund had been processed. I should see the refund on my account within 2 days.

Eventually, I did receive a box from LaptopReady.com. Of course, these idiots/criminals did not ship back all the pieces. They kept the power supply cord for themselves. As expected, Hernando Hue also lied about the refund. After 10 days of waiting, the credit had not appeared on my credit card account. Contacting this criminal enterprise is getting increasingly difficult. The phone at their Sandy Spring front is not answered at all. Calls to their 866 number do not go through or are disconnected after about 15 seconds. I eventually called their Washington DC number (they weren't expecting that) and that got me back to the heart of the criminal enterprise in Florida. A secretary said she processed my refund today and that they'd ship the power cord that they stole from me today. Pardon me, but I'm not holding my breath. Like politicians, it seems the only time these folks are not lying is when they are not speaking...

I have since found out that these criminals go by MANY aliases. Just use Google to look for their toll free number, 866-242-2752. I wouldn't trust these idiots to change a lightbulb, let alone fix a laptop.

NEXT TIME -- Look Around Locally For Repairs

This story is amazing but believable. You are in Sandy Spring and you take the laptop to LAPTOPREADY.COM for repair. There probably aren't many IT shops in that area, true. But there are small companies that perform services that you need locally and do the work locally (check the MD Pennysaver).

This case is interesting to say the least. The thing that makes this company shaky at best is that its name ends with .COM (remember the fall of the dot-com companies several years ago?). This coupled with the fact that you are dealing with guys named 'Hernando Hue' (wanna take bets as to whether he has a Green Card?). You mention that they have several telephone numbers, company names and their shop is in Florida.

A peek at their website states that they have 4 U.S. locations. What's weird here is that there are 2 locations north; the Olney store and one in Virginia; within an hour's drive. Then there are 2 in Flordia; both of them fairly close in proximity to each other. Then there are several cities listed with no further information. This company doesn't only sound like a scam, it sounds illegal!!! Having a website makes them no cleaner -- anyone can hire a geeky person to create websites!

You also mention that when you called their Washington number, they were caught off-guard. This is probably true. I'm willing to bet that all their phones ring at the same location!

You state that they sent the PC to Florida. This may sound funny, but do you really know that they sent the PC to Florida? I'm willing to bet that it remained at the local location the whole time!!! You're right, they are liars!!!

As for your refund, that one is easy. Don't call them -- call your bank. I've been there and done that with bogus charges. Many CC companies have money-back satisfaction guarantees. I would also call the MD Comptroller's office (wanna bet that they aren't licensed or paying taxes?). They would love to hear from you!!! Also, 'put a bug' in your county executive's ear as well. With Mongomery County being of the wealthiest counties in the state, I am certain that they would frown on such Vermon as this company preying on its residents.

There you have it, all the Ammo that you need. Now GO GET EM'!!! And again, surf the Pennysaver. It will stop your headaches.
