I was getting a free credit report from Experian on July 11. I then checked my bank account online on July 28 and I saw something that said "CIC*Triple Advantage" and next to it was a phone number 877-481-6825. I called it thinking that Experian had mistakenly charged me for something, but the rep answered I found out it was from freecreditreport.com.

So I continued to talk to her asking her why I'm being charged for this service I never signed up for especially considering the fact that I was never on freecreditreport.com. According to her I had signed up for it by checking the terms and agreements box and she also went on to say that the website stated it 3 times that I was signing up for it. At this point I must note that she was quite rude; so I'm guessing that by the tone of her voice this wasn't the first time she dealt with this, but that's hardly the point.

I logged on while I was still on the phone with her and I could fine any evidence of me ever signing up for this. There was even a section (that wasn't an ad) prompting me to sign up for Triple Advantage suggesting that I have not signed up for this and being urged to do so. Now here's the weird part, usually when you have an online account with a financial institution (banks, online stock brokers, PayPal, etc.) you can usually find and read the terms and agreement statement when ever you want, but in this case I couldn't find it. So I couldn't reread the document and see if the rep knew what she was talking about. Anyway I canceled this service and I'm on the lookout to see if it really was canceled and to see if I'm signed up for other services that I never agreed to have.

What's grotesque about this is that this happened to me once before in 2004 from the same people FreeCreditReport.com. Back then I didn't understand the system and I was checking my credit report for the first time so I let it slide, but this time I'm sure I didn't see and mention of FreeCreditReport.com or Triple Advantage.

I'm not sure what's exactly going on here or how I end up signing up for these things where I clearly do see and confirmation telling me this is happening or what I should do now, but I'm considering looking into class action lawsuits. I did a Google search and found that my situation isn't unique. There have been a lot people who had this happen to them. I'm looking for any class action lawsuits filed against FreeCreditReport.com or Experian on websites such as SueEasy.com and etc.

The correct website for your free, yearly credit report is annualcreditreport.com. Any other website will make you sign up for their service in order to get your free credit report. I know, by calling it freecreditreport.com, they really trick you, don't they?

www.annualcreditreport.com is the site you are looking for. I understand everyone's frustration with the title "Freecreditreport.com" but, that is NOT the site mandated by the FTC. You will have to pay to see your FICO score however, best advice is too first dispute any negative items that are not correct thru the annualreport.com website and then comeback 3-4 MONTHS LATER to Freecreditreport.com (an Experian held website) to purchase your score directly from Experian. Triple advantage will give all three of your credit scores.

Best of luck to you all,

Hi Ben,

Right on the home page, this statement is posted: When you order your free report here, you will begin your free trial membership in Triple AdvantageSM Credit Monitoring. If you don't cancel your membership within the 7-day trial period**, you will be billed $14.95 for each month that you continue your membership.

Right underneath it, it states that this website is not affiliated with the annual free credit report program. Under a new Federal law, you have the right to receive a free copy of your credit report once every 12 months from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies. To request your free annual report under that law, you must go to www.annualcreditreport.com.

Hope this helps
