The guy who came out to my house quoted me $800 for parts/labor/tax to replace 2 springs. From what I read on the internet, that quote seemed a bit high.

So I declined his service and told him that I would pay him the $29 in-home estimate fee. He then starts getting mad at me for having him called out to our house and wasting his time. How exactly am I wasting his time if I'm paying the $29 estimate fee?

He then goes on to tell me that no other garage door repair service can do it for less and that I'm a cheapskate for wanting to shop around. I found it odd and somewhat insulting that he's trying to stop me from getting another estimate. If he really had the best price, what does he have to be afraid of?

Right before he leaves, he tells me not to call his company again because I'll be blackmarked and they won't come out to my house. I thought that was an interesting sales tactic. Was he trying to use reverse psychology? LOL.

The next day I went to a local garage door manufacturing company to get some information on springs. While there I met a guy who owns his own licensed small business for installing garage doors. He followed me home, inspected the damage and quoted me $250 total for the job.

I told him about the previous $800 quote and he agreed it was a scam. He also told me that if you negotiate an unusually high quote down to price acceptable to you, they usually end up tacking on additional service charges after the job has started. So you end up paying the initial quoted estimate when the job is completed anyways.

So if the initial quote is too high, don't bother negotiating. Find someone else to do business with. If they're not honest from the beginning, they won't be honest at the end.

I should've known better not to trust a company with just a PO Box for a local address.

Americas Choice is national and is geared to rip off the customer

After having spent time learning their system I came to realize that this company is very unethical and is designed to take advantage of the customer's ignorance about parts prices and unrealistice labor prices. To top it off none of the so called garge door techs are certified by IDEA. The techs are many times very abrasive to the customer and always try to sway the customer into buying parts that the door doesn't need or sell the customer parts at inflated prices. An example that is very common is broken springs, They need to be replaced and are broken the company gets the springs wholesale for 1.70/ lb and sells them for up to 170.00. They pay 17.00 and selll them to you for 170.00. You can go online and buy a pair of springs retail for 69.00. Then comes the labor,189.00 minimum for springs, 229.00 for cable off drum. It takes 15 minutes to do either and they charge 200.00 for what may take 30 minutes tops to perform. They are geared toward selling and to have the highest ticket average for the week. Another trick that this company uses is to sell zink coated springs which are said to be superior but what the customer doesn't realize is that the zink coated springs always lose tension after a few months and a pair of springs that are properly counterbalancing the door will make the door opener pull 30-40 pounds a few months down the road and wear out the opener. Now they are creating calls for opener replacement or to recalibrate the springs at the very least. The minimum that you will pay is 89.00 for the service call or up to 500.00 to replace the opener. The opener is designed to pull only 5-10 lbs and when it tis called upon to repetitivly pull 30-40 lbs it will wear out shortly. So to some this up the customer pays and then pays again and always at inflated prices. A call which should cost 170.00 is billed at 470.00 and the tech gets 18% so all the profit goes to some owner sitting in their mansion in Dallas who has never worked a day in their life and run buy a manager in Dallas who likes to get abusive with customers and tells them that everyone else sells crappy parts when in reality all vendors are getting parts from the same distributors. Its a big national scam and someone needs to tell the truth about this business. I would find some other company to repair my door, some one with properly trained techs who aren't trying to "sell" the customer.
