Last night, a friendly young man came to our apartment door. I wasn't wearing a shirt, so my roommate answered the door. From what I heard over the TV, he seemed to know the visitor and seemed to know that he was selling magazines. My roommate is a very social guy and meets alot of people around town, so I assumed this visitor was ok. He claimed to be selling subscriptions for his "high school senior trip," only he appeared to be about 30-35 and dressed poorly. He told us that all we had to do was pick two magazines and write him a check. He then handed us a cancellation form and told us that we could fill it out and cancel the subscription with three days. We would still get the magazines, he would still get "his points," and it would cost us nothing. After claiming to be in high school, he went on to:

1. Claim he was divorced and had two kids and was partial owner of a fast food chain.
2. Offer us a job for $300 cash a day, plus the opportunity to travel the U.S.
3. Tell us how much drugs and sex he gets from his "customers."

My first indication should have been that the maintenance guys from our apartment complex were following him and trying to remove him. Like I said, this isn't the first time someone new has called or come over. Another guy at our community gym keeps offering my roommate "jobs," but nothing ever happens. I immediatly mailed the cancellation form, stopped payment on the check, and am considering changing my bank account number. Do not even let these people in your apartment. Notify your leasing office and the police as soon as possible. Don't be like me...step up to these people and don't give them any information....I'm thanking God right now that our D.O.B. and SS# weren't on the checks....Please spread the word.
