Assumable mortgages are almost non-existent these days. If you have ever had a mortgage of your own, you would have been given information on this. You could sell the home, rent it etc. But do not fault a company for not letting others assume an existing mortgage. It was probably never set up that way to begin with.

Assumable mortgages were not longer sold after around 1990. If grandma's mortgage was financed after that, it is not assumable. No mortgage company will allow someone to assume a mortgage anymore unless it was an assumable allowed mortgage sold before 1990 (or close to that).
