Etobicoke, ON

In December, 1995, I paid $21,480 (CDN) to International Super Roof (ISR) of Oakville, Ontario, to install a Fin-All aluminum interlocking roof - “The Last Roof You'll Ever Need” - guaranteed for 50 years. In March, 2002, I had to remove and replace this lifetime roof, because of extensive leaking from shoddy workmanship, broken promises, company name changes and generally bad, but apparently legal business practices.

ISR is one of a large group of companies, comprising International Exteriors, Interlock Industries, Fin-All Roofing, and Delta Building Products. Companies are located from Alaska to San Diego, from Hawaii to Nova Scotia. The BBB reports online at bbb are most revealing. Be sure to read the Interlock reports for Hawaii, Ontario, British Columbia, and the ones for Delta Building Products and Fin-All Roofing. These companies deny that they are in any way connected with one another.

Within months of my installation, there was a significant leak through the soffit near the front door. Several phone calls to ISR in May/June 1996 resulted in promises of a repairman, but nobody ever came or called and the leak continued.

In July 1997, part of the roof was removed by raccoons and again I called for a repair. Again, no response. The man who removed the raccoons had been a roofer, who noted that the removed part of the roof had not been secured in any way.

In late 1997, I noticed in the ads that the name of the company had changed to Interlock Industries, and they had moved to Mississauga. The ads were virtually identical to ISR's, the salesperson was the same, the colour names of the product were identical and some of the photos of installations in the ads were identical. Interlock was also advertising addresses of ISR installations as Interlock installations. I had seen these homes before I bought my roof.

In November, 2000, the VP of Interlock appeared at my door, for reasons unknown. He stated that although the company had changed its name, they had installed my roof. I seized the moment to show him the problems, which now included spots on a 6' x 8' area of the master bedroom ceiling around the drywall nails. He promised a repairman who never materialized.

My 'lifetime' roof, from the inside... The panels are a water collection system.

By October, 2001, water was pouring in (2.2 litres in 2 hours) through the ceiling. Interlock did send a repairman who was careful not to leave a paper trail. They stated that my warranty was still valid, but I would be required to pay for the labour. $400.00 was paid in cash to repair the hip. By November, 2001, there was even more water coming in and Interlock would not return phone calls about another repair. By December, another hip was leaking as badly, and I had to install 2 water collection systems in the attic, to get me through the winter. No other company had access to the materials to repair the roof, or the knowledge of the construction of it.

The BBB attempted intervention and were met with total refusal by Interlock to consider the problem. Their position is that I'm not their customer. Although ISR is still a registered business, mail is returned to sender, phones disconnected and the company directors don't return calls. Fin-All Roofing, the warranty company, also appears to be invisible.

So beware…. These companies appear to move and change names within the ‘family' frequently – that's how they render your 50 year warranty worthless. Their headquarters appears to be Delta Building Products, in Delta, BC.

STOP! ..before you think about using the Better Business Bureau (BBB)... CLICK HERE to see how other consumers were victimized by the BBB's false or misleading information. Don't be fooled! It has been reported, when there are thousands of complaints and other investigations underway by authorities, the BBB has no choice but to finally give an UNsatisfactory rating to a BBB member business that is paying the BBB big membership fees every year. When a business is reported that is NOT a BBB member, BBB files WILL more likely show an UNsatisfactory rating, then reportedly shake down that company to become a member of the BBB. One positive thing about the BBB is, either way, if a business has an unsatisfactory rating with the BBB, you can be sure, the business is bad. But what about all those BBB member businesses that had complaints filed against them? Consumers never get to hear about them. What about the BBB advertising to the public? Is this a false and misleading perception they are giving about “consumer confidence” when dealing with a business? Click here to understand more of what consumers and business alike are saying about the BBB. You decide. ..Remember. The BBB membership is not earned, it's paid for!

Just honor it

Interlock, like it's predecessors relies on the promise of lifetime service.

Many customers like me are watching our homes be destroyed by the damage the product is causing.

All any of these companies has to do is make an honest effort to honor the contract, rather that the corporate shell game they employ.

I do believe they can get away with it because of the Cross-border relationship.

Any how, I have to go change one of the buckets.

Sound a lot like my story. I got burned by their International Super Roof Label. Apparently Interlock is phasing in a new entity : Future roof.

Look for Future roof postings coming soon, I am Quite sure, 18 months tops.

Hang in there.

These guys underpay their workers and rip off their customers

It's true. If you look at the BBB for Interlock, you will SEE what I am talking about. They also constantly lie to you just to get more money and when they realize that there's nothing left to take, they quickly disappear and begin avoiding you. You have to actually take them to court, that is the only way you will even have a chance of getting a refund the way things currently are. They ripped me off for over $500, and the MOST that they offered to refund was $19.99 - what a joke.

Super Roof Strikes Again

I'm out Fifty Thousand Dollars because of this scam. I had the "super roof" installed by International Exteriors (Atla.) Ltd of Dartmouth, NS in 1999 on a small comercial Building. Everything was okay for a couple of years until I had my first leak. It's been three years since my first contact with the company. In that time they made two 1 hour service calls and I now have 7 different leaks. I'm sustaining ongoing damages to the interior of my building and will soon have to do something on my own or risk a total loss due to damages. So much for my fifty years warranty.

How can this type of scam still be taking place in today's educated, regulated world. With the number of complaints against these people, how can the governments still allow them to operate. Are there really that many loop holes available to these artists. Is there no way for us victims to fight back. Why isn't there a class action suit against them?

Personally, I'm going to maintain official communication with them as well as starting a publicity campaign here in Newfoundland to see how many of us are out there and to try to organize to fight this. Any comments or suggestions would certainly be welcomed through this medium.

On a positive note, I've at least been able to maintain contact with their office manager to date; she is Stephanie Doggett in Dartmouth, NS at 1-800-565-0858. Her general manager is Peter Redmond at the same number. Thanks for any who help.

One year after the original report, a written opportunity to resolve my issues was made to the lawyer for all the companies. There has been no response to date. The past year has also seen plenty of increase in negative reports by the BBB, and contact with lots of other consumers who have had similar experiences with all of these companies. Beware!!!

Interlock Industries, International Exteriors et al.

Very interesting to see the outcome of the class action lawsuit vs. Interlock in Hawaii. To my knowledge, there has been no movement on the rest of us harmed by the other companies.

I encourage Patrick to continue with his action and I will be helpful with any files and contacts that I have, if I can manage to find you on the net. You could try the Canadian Association for Aluminum Roof Problems (CAARP) to connect. There are so many people with roof problems from the Wenzel companies that I find it hard to believe that Wenzel would ever turn over a new leaf.

Keep posting your Ripoff Reports to this site - at least they turn up in Google searches. Interlock's tactics these days seem to involve flooding the Internet with all sorts of links about the same thing. The only thing that will make a difference is to divert their business with bad publicity.

If anyone has had any success in getting settlements with these companies, it would be encouraging for the rest of us to hear about how you did it. Eventually they will change their name again; be vigilant and keep all of us informed.

About to purchase a house with Fin-all roof installed...

I am in the process of purchasing a house that had a fin-all roof installed approximately 3.5 years ago by International Exteriors (ATLA.) Ltd based in Dartmouth, NS (I am in NL). I didn't know much about aluminium roofs before but the seller assured me there was a 50 year waranty so I assumed I was covered. After receiving the information on the type of roof from the current owner, I did a search on the internet and... well found this site and glad I did (thanks Ripoff Report).

I have attemped numerous times to contact IEL about transfering the warranty with no success. I have inspected the attic and there have been no signs of leaks since the roof has been installed. From what I have found it seems that most people have experienced leaks shortly after the roof is installed do to poor installation. Since its been 3.5 years with no leaks, is it possible this roof was installed properly and therefore okay???

From what I have learned, if I buy this house I will not have any type of warranty on the roof and therefore be a gamble. Any information with regard to time between installation and leaks appearing (or other advice) would be appreciated.

Like many companies, our policy at Interlock has been not to respond to online complaints. Some consumers will never be made happy and we would rather spend our time on customers who are really interested in working with us to resolve any problems or concerns they may have. In this instance, however, we feel that some very important information was not addressed and we would like to ensure this information is made available so that readers can make a fully informed assessment.

Ms. Taylor purchased a roof in 1995 from a Ontario company called International Super Roof, Inc.. Interlock Industries (Ont.) Inc. is not affiliated nor did it have any ownership interests in this Ontario Company. We gave Ms. Taylor this information and recently provided Ms. Taylor with corporate search information we obtained from the Ontario corporate records company, Dye ‘n Durham, which confirmed this information. The corporate search documents we obtained are attached. Once we forwarded this information to the BBB, they recognized an error had been made and amended our status accordingly.

It is unfortunate that Ms. Taylor did not get the roof she paid for but in her effort to make someone pay, she has tarnished our company's installation record. The original installation company, which she had contracted with, went out of business.

Ms. Taylor has been provided with a resolution in that Fin-All, the manufacturer of the roofing product, has offered to reimburse Ms. Taylor for the material costs of her original roofing system, despite the fact that her roofing problems resulted from a poor installation and was not the result of product failure.

Interlock has installed thousands of Interlock roofing systems. We could not have been in business had it not been for a superior product and installations. An Interlock roof is backed by a lifetime warranty for materials and labor and 50 year transferable, 100% non-prorated. Unfortunately the contractor that installed Ms. Taylor roof is no longer in business.

Ms. Taylor is not alone.. I'm not pleased at all with the sloppy installation job on my Fin-All Roof.

I did NOT contract with John, Tom, Dick or Harry to do my roof, I contracted with International Exteriors for my roof and that is who I signed a contract with. One year later, I have no warranty, my costs have not been satisfied, my vet bills have not been paid and my contract was not honoured.

She is certainly not alone dealing with these shoddy individuals and the shoddy workmanship.

In my case, I offered to exchange my cheque for my warranty but they refused and instead threatened us with liening the house. The Vancouver offices GUARANTEED (quote "trust me") they would have my warranty to me within 30 days.

Don't trust them.

Response to Delta

Scott,

You've missed the point. The issue has never been whether what you are doing is legal – it is acknowledged that it is. Customer service is the issue.

Consumers wouldn't mind if you changed your name and continued to provide service. Since Delta's product is exclusive, there is no other place for a consumer to go for product or repair.

Consumers mind very much that you change your name and they can't get product to do a modification on their home; can't get a leak fixed; can't get a repair if a tree falls on the roof; and can't get a faulty product replaced. There are many postings on the Internet that will confirm that.

That is what your potential customers need to know.

Buying a house with a Fin-all roof

Be careful about the roof. You will have a hard time finding a good contractor that will get up to clean or fix a chimney, repair a dormer or other work that is required. We finally found one chimney sweep that will clean our chimney without getting on the roof and we have spent about 2 months finally getting a mason to come look at minor chimney repairs. Any we call, we mention the Fin-All roof and they tell us sorry they can't do it.

I have this roof

I have had an Interlock roof on my house for a little over 5 years now. Aside from a mess in the yard, which they came back to clean up in the spring, I was/am completely satisfied. The crew was friendly, hard working, and did a great job. My energy bills have even gone down like the salesman said they would.

I referred my friend to Interlock and he researched and found this website. Every company has some unhappy customers at some point, especially when they are as large as Interlock. It is certainly not a "Rip-Off".

Had my whole replace free of charge under warranty by International Exteriors in Dartmouth

I had a Roof installed back in the mid 90's by International Exteriors in Dartmouth. In 2004 I notice a leak off on my back porch and called to have it repair under warranty. They sent someone out about a month after my call to assess my roof. They decided the whole roof needed to be replaced due to poor workmen ship. They secured the leaking section until such replacement could take place. It did take them about 5 months to come and replace the whole roof but they did with no issues and I didn't have to pay the labour. They get a thumbs up from me! Thanks

Twelve plus years and counting

Perhaps this business is going to recify some of the wrongs, but I think it took a class action lawsuit in Hawaii to do it. The BBB report on International Exteriors for today's date still states they are unsatisfactory.

I'm still out an awful lot of money. They have a long way to go before I can give them a thumbs up. Poor workmanship cost me my whole roof, plus another roof to replace it, plus about $4,000 to fix the damage to my attic and ceilings. I still cringe every time I see one of their roofs.

Thank you!

I have been trying for about two weeks now to get hold of Interlock Ontario and no phone calls have been returned.

Very telling.

After some searching around, I came across this site and the report horror stories. I see the pieces falling into place now. It struck me as questionable, the fact that a company has only a central call center (where they get to call you back at their convenience) and no number to call for information, service, etc. As well, the complete lack of interest in new business also smacks of a company that cares little for their current or esp. new customers.

I'm glad I found this report... my suspicions are confirmed and I will be hiring a local contractor to install quality asphalt shingles on my roof (I'd opt for steel but the boss hates standard steel panels).

Thank you for saving me a ton of grief and money!

More than one bad apple

Check out what happened in Hawaii! It has been reported on the Internet since May 2005. Of about 2700 roofs installed by Interlock in Hawaii over a period of 3-4 years, 1000 are problematic. The Hawaiian authorities have suspended Interlock's license and fined them over $200,000.

The 1000 victims have approval to proceed with a class action lawsuit.

In Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, International Exteriors has had its BBB membership revoked on August 17, 2005 for "failure to eliminate the underlying cause of complaints on file with the BBB."

There seems to be a pattern here...

I have product that proves these companies are linked...

...my father's Interlock roof in Ontario was leaking and was very poorly installed. Interlock, after a number of visits and inspections, finally repaired it. I was visiting him in September/04 while they worked on his roof.

I have obtained old product samples from his roof, new roofing product installed and the new underlay installed, and it is the same as the product I have on my leaking, poorly installed roof in Nova Scotia marketed as Fin-All by International Exteriors. So much for their claims of exclusivity of product!

Now, gee, these companies all deny that they are linked in any way (although an extensive corporate search does show linking through parties/addresses/solicitors). In the result one has to believe that either somebody has to either be lying OR they should be suing each other for copyright/patent infringement for using the EXACTLY same product - right down to the identical marks on the die-cut/stamp producing the shingles.
