South Haven Health And Rehabilitation Neglegent, substandard care of the disabled Montgomery Alabama

My husband suffered from pneumonia during Christmas in 2007. He was rushed to the hospital on December 26, 2007 where he stayed until January 25, 2008. He still needed rehabilitation to recover from the pneumonia so he was sent to South Haven. He was to be there for three months undergoing physical therapy to regain his strength. He came home in late February, around the 20th I believe.

While he was there, he was given blood thinners twice a day. No blood tests were done to keep a check on his blood thinner levels. He was slowly being overdosed on blood thinners. This became apparent when he began to bleed from his mouth and nose and his urine became bloody with no present infections. His belly was covered in bruises where he had been given the shots and simply touching him caused him to bruise. His leg wounds due to diabetic ulcers had gotten worse due to the lack of care and overdosing of blood thinners.

He was rushed back to the hospital after three days of bleeding only because one of the nurses ignored the policies and sent for an ambulance. After sending my husband to the hospital, his blood thinner levels were so high they had to give him a coagulant serum and two full units of fresh plasma to encourage clotting. He was bleeding internally and would have died if not for the nurse that went above the chain of command and ignored facility policies.

He was returned to South Haven so I could make the necessary arrangements to bring him back home. During that time, he was seriously neglected and left dirty for more than 12 hours following a bowel movement! He was refused the physical therapy he had been getting in the hospital because they didn't want to bother helping an obese man get up and walk. I sent my husband to them so he would get better, not to be killed by incompetence!

As of March 8, 2009, we have a lawsuit against South Haven for gross negligence, substandard care, and medical malpractice. This report is meant to help other people make informative decisions on Nursing Home placement for their loved ones. South Haven is NOT the place to send your overweight, invalid loved ones unless you want them to die from negligence and incompetence. I will update as soon as our case is settled.
