On June 16, 2009 I purchased a DVD of my college graduation. According to the website, "DVDGRADUATION.com", delivery would take from 6-8 weeks after the ceremony date which was May 25. In mid to late August when I did not receive my DVD, I became concerned and made a phone call to "DVD Graduation".
I called the company and told them that I did not receive my DVD. They told me that the shipping department would return my call. A few days went by and no one returned my call.
I made another call and told them that no one had returned my call and I was worried that I did not receive my DVD. Again, the shipping department never called. I waited for a week and by this time I was very upset.
I called again and told them that it was pretty clear that I was being lied to. The woman on the other end told me that the shipping department would call me back. I told her that I did not expect it since they never did.
When I asked her for the shipping department's number she told me she did not have the number. It was clear to me that the number lead to an answering service.
After I spoke with her, I called my credit card company, told them what was going on and filed for a credit dispute. As of now, the investigation is still pending and I am expecting a call from them tomorrow.
A week ago I went to the company's website and e-mailed them. In the e-mail, I told them my story and told them that if I did not hear from them that I was going to make a formal complaint to the California Business Bureau and that I filed a credit dispute.
A week went by and I did not hear from them. I e-mailed them again and told them that I was going to make a formal complaint and told them how "truly pathetic" their company is.
I went to BBB and made a formal complaint. I was not surprised that I was not the first to do so. Stephen Mancini was the provided name on BBB.
I then e-mailed the company again to tell them what I found on the BBB. At this point, I was extremely upset and I felt they needed to know that I was not going to let this pass.
After this e-mail, I received two e-mails from Stephen at DVD Graduation.
The first e-mail as follows on September 6, 2009:
Hi Fallon,
We had some technical issues in the beginning of this season which has caused delays in shipping orders.
Due to this problem, we are overwhelmed with customer support calls and may take longer than usual to respond.
We have been in business for over 10 years and serve over 80,000 graduates each year.
DVD Graduation does not have a negative profile on the BBB unless it has been cross referenced with DVD Marathon (we had this problem in the past).
I can assure you that DVD Graduation is a reputable company with a high quality product.
If you cancelled your credit card payment, then unfortunately your DVD order may be cancelled also.
We sent an email to all CSU Chico customers on August 28, 2009.
The second e-mail 10 minutes later:
Hi Fallon,
I just researched your order in our database and did not find it.
We do not have you in our system.
Did you purchase the DVD under a different name?
Please provide information used when purchasing the DVD so I can locate your order:
NAME:
TELEPHONE:
ADDRESS:
GRADUATION DATE:
EMAIL:
The first step is locating your order, then I can assist you further.
Thank you,
Stephen
DVD GraduationI received these e-mails after I threatened to make a formal complaint, which made it clear to me that this was not a legitimate company.
A legitimate company would have notified me early in the summer instead of late August. The only reason why he e-mailed me was because I threatened to make a formal complaint.
Also, for a company who is "overwhelmed with customer support calls", I find it odd that he e-mailed me twice in 10 minutes.
I told Stephen that if I was not in his records, then why was my credit card billed? I also included my e-mail address in my order because I wanted a receipt sent directly to my e-mail (like most businesses) and never received one.
I also suggested that if Marathon caused him so many problems then he should not be affiliated with them any longer.
Feeling that I had been taken advantage of, I did some research. I typed in to google search "Stephen Mancini DVD Graduation" and at the bottom of the page I found a similar complaint about DVD Marathon on Ripoff Report.com.
After reading the customer's story, I found that his story was very similar to mine. The company's address and phone number was the same. The only difference was the name Stephen Grudenic instead of Stephen Mancini (the name that appears on BBB).
I then typed in to google search "Stephen Grudenic DVD Marathon" and found a 20 page discussion forum dedicated to DVD Marathon. The last post was in June 2007.
In this forum, numerous marathon runners purchased a DVD through DVD Marathon and experienced the same song and dance. Some customers shared their e-mails and their e-mails were very similar to mine, stating technical difficulties and that the DVD was shipped on a certain date, and assured the customer they would receive it.
After reading these stories, I concluded that DVD Marathon and DVD Graduation are the same thing. The phone number, address and name (Stephen) are the same.
I e-mailed Stephen back and told him what I discovered and to not bother e-mailing me back. He did.
His third e-mail on Sep. 6:
Hi Fallon,
The reason why I was unable to locate your order is because it was on hold.
You failed to specify the ceremony date and time when you placed your order through PayPal on June 16th.
The address on file is:
We would like to send you your DVD this coming week if you can tell me the ceremony information needed.
I'm not sure what stories you were reading online, but I can assure you that everyone receives their DVDs.
If we have a technical delay, it effects thousands of orders which makes it difficult to respond to everyone quickly.
In your case, the email updates were not sent because your order was on hold.
Our product is excellent and I'm sure you will enjoy the DVD.
We get email all the time from customers who love the product.
Respond with the information needed and I will send you your graduation DVD.
Stephen
DVD GraduationI then e-mailed him back stating that I did include my graduation date. There are only two boxes to fill out when you order the DVD: One is for the school and the second is the graduation date. I told him if that were the case then someone should have notified me.
I also included the weblinks to the information in which I was referring to. I also pointed out that if I wasn't in his computer records then why did he all of a sudden have my mailing address? After this e-mail, I have not heard from him.
When looking at my story and the stories of others, I have come to the conclusion that this company, or man, will lie to his customers. He will make up every excuse and blame you. Once you debunk his theory he makes up a new one. DVD Graduation and DVD Marathon are the same thing.
Perhaps, Stephen Grudenic does not make DVDs for marathons any longer and has moved on to College Graduations. Hopefully, he will be caught and this will be the last we hear of DVD Graduation
I posted this on here to help other students who have purchased a DVD just like the stories of DVD Marathon customers helped me.
