I used Intelius to find a relative's address for a Chrismas card.  The fee was to be $.95 instead of the usual $.99 for simply finding the  address.   However, Iwas charged an additional fee of $19.95 on December 29th at 2:17 AM  five days after the original request for $.95.

Due to this additional charge, my bank account was charged and it was then overdrawn.
So, in addition to the unwanted $19.95 fee I now owe money to a bank that I use for several other regular payments.   I have to sign a dispute form and in the meantime pay for the overdrawn fee. I am concerned.

The accounts of Intellius I read on the internet do not bode well.  It seems even after you cancel your subscription ,even if you did not sign up for it, they continue to charge you.  They even tell you that you authorized the additional money.  That is not the truth.  Their advertising is false and can damage your credit.

Here's part of their search page.....

AUTHOR: Ken - (USA)

The Special Price is available with a trial membership in Identity Protect, an award winning service designed to help you protect your         identity, including credit monitoring, alerting services and other identity protection tools.  After your 7-day trial membership, you will         be charged the regular membership fee of $19.95 per month, plus tax where applicable, so long as you remain a member.         You may cancel at anytime.  If you choose the Special Price, you can see a complete description of the service and the detailed Offer         and Continuous Renewal Details on the next page.  You will have a chance to remove the trial membership and pay the Regular Price.

I read it and the regular price is $4.99.

Looks like you missed that part.

Warning: Intelius will steal from your credit card account and your personal info

AUTHOR: JohnSmith - (USA)

They will enroll you in their (useless and fraudulent) Fraud protection regardless of whether or not you choose the discounted rate for the (also useless and fraudulent) record search.

When I requested a record at the non-discounted rate of $1.95, and realized that they have absolutely NO RECORD on the person they claimed to have found, I immediately asked for a refund.

Well, they said "sure we'll refund you", but then they went ahead and signed me up for their USELESS "Fraud Alert" scam for $19.95.  I told my credit card about the fraudulent charge and Intelius is disputing it, saying that I had agreed to sign up for  this stupid, useless scam of theirs!!

AVOID INTELIUS AT ALL COST! THEY LIE ABOUT HAVING FOUND A RECORD YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SO THEY CAN STEAL YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER AND SIGN YOU UP FOR BOGUS "SERVICES" WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE OR CONSENT.

INTELIUS ALSO STEALS PRIVATE CUSTOMER INFORMATION AND OFFERS IT FOR SALE!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few days after this incident I noticed my PRIVATE address and phone number was now listed on a web site called phonesbook.com.

I was flabbergasted: I had never given this unlisted information to anyone. After spending the time doing some research, it became clear that "phonesbook.com", the mystery website that was giving out my personal information, belongs to, you guessed it, Intelius!!

Furious, I called them up asking them where they got this information and they smugly said they have their sources and assured me that their sources are legit. Yea right, they steal private customer information, sell it and post parts of it it on-line, sounds innocent to me!

Next, they offered to "Remove" my information if I faxed them my Driver's License! Yea right I said, so I am going to fax you thieves my License (with Photo ID, Address, D/L Number etc.) so that you can sell my picture along with D/L number to every crook in the country as part of your "Enhanced Background Check" right? I gave them another chance to remove the information voluntarily and the moron on the phone smugly refused repeating that the only way was for me to fax them my Driver's license.

I promptly told Intelius that their actions will have consequences...and here it is: my Intelius/phonesbook.com ripoff report.
