I needed to connect to an international flight from Owerri airport to the Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria so I could catch a plane back to the good ole US of A. I used Arik Airline hoping that they would live up to their values and standards that they posted on their website of 'We act with integrity at all times ". I was proved wrong. When I arrived to check my luggage in I was harassed by two Arik employees saying that I must give them 9000 Nigerian dollars so that they could check in my luggage. They said it was company policy that anyone who had over 20 kilos( 44pounds) of luggage must pay 450 naira(Nigeiran dolalrs) per extra kilograms. They said I had excess luggage. The two Arik employees put my luggage on the scale and said it weighed 60 kilos. I told them to let me see the scale.

They got verbal with me and told me to just pay the money. I was very upset and asked to speak the a supervisor. They gave me a phone number to call. I paid the  money because I sensed they might get physical with me. After checking in my luggage I went through security and told them I wanted to speak to the supervisor of the Owerri airport because I believe I was just cheated out of my hard earned money.

They ignored me and passed me through the line. By now I was fuming and just wanted to get to the United States. When it was time to board we were told to walk out to the tarmac and board the plane.

Upon standing in line to climb up the saris I saw five Arik employees standing outside with the suitcases that were about to be put unto the cargo. Several of them kept pulling people to the side. I was hoping not to get pulled over. I did and to my astonishment was asked for more money because they needed money to buy gifts for Christmas they said or they would not put my luggage on the plane. I gave them a couple of Nigerian dollars out of frustration and was just glad to get on the plane. I will never fly with Arik Airlines again. They do not live up
to their mission statement. I filed a complaint with them once I returned to the US, but was told I would not get my money back. I still want my money back for the so called "excess luggage" you money hungry leeches!
