In the past year I have flown United Airlines at least half a dozen times, other airlines allow you to select seats online after purchase of your ticket. I noticed United would not allow me to pick my seat, and upon arrival to the airport and checking in, they assigned me a middle seat in every instance. Once I requested an isle or window they immediately let me know the only option is to pay $39.00 to upgrade to Economy Plus.

For those who don't know Economy Plus, it is the same a an economy seat with a bit more humane legroom, which other airlines call...well.... AN ECONOMY SEAT! Every year I fly quite a bit, I have never been stuck in the middle or been unable to change seats for six consecutive flights unless I pay a surcharge.

Further more when the doors are shut they prohibit you from moving to Economy Plus seats even if the plane is empty and you are stuck between two 300 pounder fellow passengers. I have a sneaky suspicion consistently getting stuck in the middle, then getting hustled for an additional $39.00 is by design, which I have to believe is illegal. I am surprised that no class action attorneys have picked up on this.

Last but not least United Airlines service is inexcusable, I think here is an airline which deserves to go the way of Eastern Airlines, TWA, etc..

GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE CLOUDS MIKE

AUTHOR: Margaret - Houston (U.S.A.)

I see your are from Houston, would you rather fly that sh$%&y Continental? They don't even own their own airplanes, pay their employee's lower than a lot of the other airlines and make you buy a ticket for a pet that is not even sitting in the seat! Shame on you for saying that United should go the way of Eastern and other defunct ones. If you want to choose a seat so damn bad why don't you fly Southwest then you can run for your choice seat along with everyone else running like a cattle call! Quit complaining and be HAPPY there are still a few REAL Airlines left!

But Things Are "Better" Now

AUTHOR: Cory - San Antonio (U.S.A.)

This sounds just like all the banks trying to tell us how much "better" things are now-a-days. In the old days, you got assigned a seat. Then they went to open seating, first come, first serve or in this case, first seat. The reason they went to that style of seating was because the majority of people could care less where they sit and it makes getting on and off a bit faster. No one looking for their assigned seats. Then some airline weenie thinks up the great idea of charging for an assigned seat, something they use to get for free. Great idea, let's charge them for something that doesn't cost us a thing. We'll make millons. Yes ser, just like the banks are doing.

Doesn't Make Sense

AUTHOR: Karl - Clovis (U.S.A.)

Let's see - you always get a middle seat and if you pay extra to get in Economy Plus (which sounds like a fantastic bargain) you get an aisle or window.

Wonder how come your fellow seat mates got windows and aisles when THEY aren't in Economy Plus? Why don't you ask them next time? Your story sounds good but doesn't hold water. You obviously booked when the plane was practically full and middles were all there were or you got told that the "seat will be assigned at the airport". This is usually because the plane is almost full or actually overbooked and the airline wants to know how many people actually show up. United could care less whether or not you book Economy Plus but if the plane is empty and you get a middle seat it is a simple matter to slide into an aisle or window.

Never heard of that!

AUTHOR: Michael - Glendale (U.S.A.)

I fly all the time and I have always been able to pick a seat when I book. Sometimes only middle seats are left. In those cases I have paid for Economy Plus. It is better, hence it costs more.

Oh, and BTW, the Economy Plus seats have more leg room than other airlines. I fly many airlines and they are all about the same. The United regular seats are just like most of the airlines regular seats.

AA Added more leg room to all their seats a few years back, but quickly took it away.

Now AirTran on the other hand seems to allow only middle seats, and you have to pay extra for a window or an aisle. I have only booked with them once and that was the case. Don't know if it's always the case, but the plane was practically empty when I picked the seat.

Margaret is Wrong

AUTHOR: Karl - Clovis (U.S.A.)

Absolutely nothing wrong with Southwest. You get assigned to a group and number when you make a reservation on line and stand in the group just before boarding at your designated number (if you are 23 you stand behind 22) and board when they call your group .In the old days there WAS a cattle call -all 30 people in each group ran for the jetway but now it is very orderly and I ALWAYS get a window or aisle because I get a boarding pass on line 24 hours before departure time. Southwest also has no fees and has great customer service. Why people fly anybody else if SWA goes there is beyond me.
