    ...the right way!
    Corporate Advocacy Program
I have been using Banfield's Wellness Plans since I got our dog about 4 years ago and have not had any real problems until recently. When I first brought our dog in, she had an allergic reaction to one of the 1/2-dozen vaccinations they administered. At the time, it was not a big deal to pay the additional fee for Benadryl (about $15). Recently, the policies have changed and they now require TWO pre-vaccinations shots costing $20 EACH. I bring my dog in for multiple shots throughout the year and now each time I come in, it costs me an additional $40! In five visits, I'm now paying TWICE what the original Wellness plan costs.

When I tried to work with the doctors to bring my dog in and just get her 2 shots at a time without the pre-vaccination shots to see if we could figure out which one she is allergic to, they refused and said that their corporate office REQUIRES they give the pre-vaccination shots. There are no exceptions and they refused to help me.

When I tried calling the corporate office to get some assistance, they confirmed this policy. When I asked to cancel my Wellness Plan, they (politely) informed me that because my Wellness Plan started in June (and this was September), I would have to pay the balance of the cost of services that I saved from my first visit in June ($97).

So basically, either way, I'm screwed.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Vaccination Costs.

AUTHOR: Robert - Tampa (U.S.A.)

I have used Banfield and other pet hospitals since I have always have had several dogs. They do not over vaccinate. You need to be educated because an educated consumer more than likely will have a lesser chance of being ripped off. Some animals may have a reaction to vaccines. Yes benadrl or any antihistamine may be given before an injection to prevent a reaction to the vaccine, if your pet has had a reaction in the past it is advised to do so. If your pet has not had a reaction to any vaccines then there should not be much to worry about. I must tell you a reaction may happen at any given time with a vaccine, it is somewhat rare but it happens. One must remember that Banfield the Pet Hospital is not the same anymore. They are owned not by Pet's Mart, but by M&M Mars the Chocolate company. The owners who purchase a franchise are pretty much obligated to offer these services and can only sell products that Banfield has incorporated into their formulary and policy and procedures. You are the consumer, they can not sell, or administer any vaccine or medicine that you are not willing to pay for. You can say, no to the benadryl and wait 20 to 30 minutes post vaccination to see if your pet does not have a reaction. One should always have benadryl available at home for any human or pet medication allergic reaction. No I do not work for Banfielfd. Yes I do use Banfield services, but have my own veterinarian for any other problem that is not covered my their wellness plans.

#2 Consumer Comment

They don't over vaccinate, huh?

AUTHOR: Jack Hawksmore - Funkytown (United States of America)

Banfield doesn't over vaccinate? On the contrary.

In 2007 here in Orlando Florida at the Banfield near Semoran and Colonial/50, my less than 10 lb miniature breed puppy was in for her rabies vaccination and they administered 7X the amount for the dog of that size. My dog's blood had to be taken out of her body and given a transfusion so she didn't die.

My dog now has a bald spot on the site of the injection AND walks with a limp.

And yes, I still want to sue Banfield for malpractice if any lawyers reading this would like to take my case.
