In June 2010 we purchased a blue female great dane puppy from Trish Hanson at Niobrara Great Danes in Nebraska. She arrived at our house on August 21st 2010 at 9 weeks of age. She suddenly dropped dead at my feet in my living room on August 8th 2011 at 13 months old.

During 11 months she was with us we had multiple vet visits for health issues starting upon her arrival. Upon arriving to us I knew something was not right as she had zero control over her bladder, we saw the vet multiple times for this during her first few weeks in our home, her testing eventually came back with extreme amounts of e-coli in her system. I did have many conversations with Trish about this; she listened but not helpful and did not offer any solutions, except for getting angry when I told her that she arrived with it and most likely had contracted it in the whelping area. I did not expect to receive a puppy that required hundreds of dollars of vet care within her first few weeks with us, especially since this was supposed to be a quality dog for which we paid $2200.

Over the next few months I found Trish to be quite responsive to my calls as I had many questions. My girl was very small and not growing as expected, I was surprised as Trish had told me that her dam was 33” & 135lbs and her sire was 36 1/2”. She also had very bad haws and very high visible 3rd eyelids. In one of my conversations with Trish I asked about this and was told that her sire had eyes just like this but that it was a common and normal trait for great danes. I also asked why she was so small, to which I was told that her dam was small and only 30-31” which is 2-3 inches shorter than I was told before purchase.

We had also discussed health testing in depth and how important it was before our purchase, I was told that all health testing was done and that the dogs were retested every two years, after we started having some health issues I looked up the parents on OFA but they were not listed, in fact none of the dogs at Niobrara are listed. I contacted Trish about this, she responded that she does test but does not send the results in, so I asked to please send me copies of the tests done on the parents for my records. I received no response and at this point Trish became very hard to get hold of. I was never able to get her on the phone nor did she respond to my e-mails.

I sent many e-mails over the next few months as I had questions that only she could answer, that related to her line, I also called regularly and left messages to call me that I would like to talk and had questions… no response…not one.

The last time I actually got hold of Trish was in April 2011 when I actually got her on the phone, however she told me she was running out and would call me back in 10 mins, she never did nor did I hear from her again. Also in April my bitches allergies kicked in resulting in more vet visits, her haws were getting worse and her 3rd eyelids were getting higher. More unreturned calls. Life went on, we loved that dog, allergies, bad eyes, small, didn’t matter she was our baby girl !!

On August 8th 2011, lovely lazy summer day, we had spent the day relaxing, nothing unusual at all. At 5.30pm she came over to me for some lovings, and laid on the floor at my feet, I was just about to get up and get her dinner ready when she let out an awful howl, I dived to the floor to her side, but she was DEAD. I was shocked it happened in a matter of seconds, literally I was right there, yet in the time it took me to dive to the floor she was gone.

I can’t even describe how awful it was, my husband was deployed to Iraq and I was home alone. I was hysterical and devastated. My neighbors came over and helped me take her body to the vet. We did not even have her 1 full year, she was only 13 months old. I told the vet I wanted to necropsy but wanted to talk to my breeder first, they agreed they would hold her until they heard back from me.

I called Trish multiple times that evening, constantly, I called her cell, her home, I left messages on both phones. I e-mailed her, I posted on her facebook that I needed her. For some reason I thought I needed her, I don’t know why, but she was my breeder. Thankfully two of my friends came over to be with me.

Trish finally picked up her phone at 7.20pm, I was hysterical I told her what happened, Trish said “oh I’m so very sorry, was she bit by snake, was she bit by a spider” I said no I think she had a heart attack. I told her the vet was holding her body waiting to hear from me as I had requested a necropsy but told them I needed to talk to her first as I did not know what to do. I was so upset and all I could think of was that they would be cutting up my baby girl, I wanted answers but all I could think of was my poor sweet girl lying there dead and being cut open L

Trish said she was fine with whatever decision I made, that she understood and then said  “when your heart has healed a bit give me a call and I will “work with you” on another puppy”. While this conversation was happening my vet called my cell phone and my friend answered, they needed an answer as they could not hold her much longer, so we told them we would skip the necropsy and to go ahead and arrange her cremation.

That night I had to sit here and wait for my husband to call via skype from Iraq so I could tell him that we had lost our baby girl, he was due to come home 1 month later and our baby girl would not be here waiting for him.

Early the next morning I received a facebook message from Trish stating that she had spoken with her vet and that she had showed him pictures of my dog and that they were all in agreement that she did not have a heart condition, that it must have been something else…

(not doing the necropsy came back and bit me fast)

We knew that we did not want to be “worked with” on another puppy from Trish b/c of what just happened and with the other problems she had during her short life we felt that another pup was out if the question as we did not want our hearts broken again. Trish at Niobrara Great Danes gives a 2 year health guarantee, and since our baby girl passed at only 13 months we felt a refund was the only option.

During this time I joined an online dane forum where I learned of other Niobrara dogs with health issues, some had allergies, some had cherry eye and entropian, and another died of auto immune. This of course only solidified our decision that we could in no way trust our health to another Niobrara puppy and a refund was in order.

So the messages started and yes they got nasty, our request for a refund was ignored, instead Trish’s e-mails concentrated on talking in circles, using big words trying to confuse us, and deflection. She was angry that we were questioning her, yet we were the ones who lost our baby, WE had the right to be angry!

We also learned that our pups great grandsire died of a heart condition at 3 years old, to which she responded that he died of a heart condition b/c he was standing too close to a lightening strike. Also that her grandsire also died young, her story here is that he died from “a run in with a porcupine”. Once I told her about the other dogs that I knew about and their health issues she promptly deleted me as a friend and blocked me from her facebook. Still never addressing our request for a refund. Leaving many of my responses unanswered.

During the months that followed I learned of more dogs/pups from her program with health issues, and met other owners who have also been left high and dry and ignored by Trish. There is one in particular who is only 18 months old and is a genetic mess he is blind in one eye and partially blind in the other, he has severe allergies, and is very small, his owner has had no response to her many messages from Trish. Upon further research I also realized that many of her dogs die young even those on her in memory page died young, the average seems to be 4-6 years old.

After 6 months I finally felt ready/able to address Trish and some of her remarks she made in our earlier communications, also to address the lies that she told me before purchase, and of course to again address the fact that she never responded to our request for a refund even though we asked multiple times.

We had to do this via regular e-mail since she has me blocked on FB. She did respond although she did not address anything other than to say that I was being nasty and that she had offered me a replacement puppy and that I had to Feb 15th to tell her if I wanted one.

I told her that due to the number of dogs with health issues that I had learned about which I had mentioned in our previous communications and 3 more than I have learned about during the last few months, that we in no way wanted another pup from her, and that we were firm in our decision and felt the only option was a refund, which considering circumstances we felt any reasonable person would agree. There was no way we could trust our hearts to another of her pups, that would be setting ourselves up for the possibility of more heartbreak.

Trish responded stating that she would NOT refund our money, that we could not prove anything (not doing the necropsy coming back to bite me again) and that as far as she was concerned the dog died from eating something in our back yard, or a neighbor gave her a poisoned treat and we could not rove otherwise. She also stated that she was only responsible for the health of the pup up to when it left her, that after she arrived in our home WE were responsible for her health. So much for her 2 year health guarantee.

In closing I have found this whole experience distasteful and Trish to be a truly disgusting, nasty and dishonest person who refuses to stand behind the health of her pups. We had our girl less than a year we paid $2200 plus shipping, during the 11 months we had her, our vet bills totaled almost $1500 a lot for a supposedly healthy, well bred pup! We received zero support and are left heartbroken with a guarantee that was not honored!

Niobrara Great Danes

AUTHOR: Niobrara - Harrison (United States of America)

Niobrara Great Danes is a Nebraska State Licensed and inspected kennel as well as an AKC inspected kennel.  We are inspected YEARLY and very thoroughly on the health of our Danes and our records. A veterinarian is required to sign also on the care and health of our Danes which is Dr. Justin Welsh at Pioneer Animal Clinic in Scottsbluff Neb. He has exclusively been the veterinarian for this program for over 8 years. He is also the veterinarian that does the health exams for the puppies before they go on their flights to their new homes.

We have an extensive Puppy Questionaire/Contract that is filled out by potential owners and sent to us agreeing to our terms which I can provide. Never in the lifetime of the dog can it be sold, given away or rehomed. It must be returned to Niobrara at the owners expense if they are no longer able to care for the dog.  Pet puppies are sold on a limited registration, and are on a contract to be spayed or neutered by 11 months of age. This will insure that our dogs are not bred, but they also cannot compete in AKC conformation shows.  These terms were all agreed to by this family also and the questionaire /contract was sent to me and I do have it.

New owners are requested to have their puppy to a vet within 48 hours of their flight landing to insure the health of the puppy . If there is a problem with the puppy, the puppy is to be returned to Niobrara Great Danes immediately and another puppy of equal value would be provided to them.  This has never happened in the history of this program.  We do not guarantee against any virus, such as parvo or distemper, as a puppy could pick this up anywhere and they have one vaccine when they leave here and the new owner is responsible for all vaccinations after this.

As with all breeders, we guarantee against a genetic condition making this dog unsuitable as a pet or causing its death. We will replace a puppy that would fall in this category, but this does require a veterinary statement as an owner cannot possibly diagnose a genetic condition. At no time do we agree to pay vet bills for a dog. If there is a problem with a dog, it needs to be returned to us and we will provide a replacement of equal value. This is standard for almost all breeders of any animal.

There has never been a vet statement of ANY health problems with this dog sent to us. I have requested a statement from a vet on ANY health problem or cause of death. Never has anything been provided.Nor is it being provided here.    There has never been a request to return the dog because it was unhealthy. I have the beautiful photos taken by the owner of her and the continued request that she wanted to start showing the dog in AKC shows. Do you request to show a dog and have her registration moved from limited to full registration if she is unhealthy and has health issues?

Allergies in dogs are very common and are usually food based , this is the owners responsibility to make sure they are feeding a quality kibble that does not contain lots of corn or chicken by products. They cannot feed a poor quality kibble and continue to cause a problem and then hold a breeder responsible for it. I have no more control over a dog having allergies than I do with my children being allergic to something.

There are a million reasons that could be for a sudden death in a Dane. They are an unhealthy breed as a whole and this is common knowledge. Bacteria, clostridial problem, brain anurysm, poison, accute allergic reaction to a bite i.e spider, bee, snake, heart problem. Not one time in all of her supposed vet visits was there anything documented about this dog having  a heart murmur or any kind of a heart problem. These can all cause a sudden death. Thus the reason for a necropsy to be done.

I said I wanted a necropsy but the owner was hysterical and said she did not want to do it. I didn't want to upset her any further than she already was . This death could be completely of their fault but I did not question for one minute that I would offer to replace their dog regardless of if it was their fault. I offered immediately on the phone to replace to replace the dog when she was ready for a new one. I did not in anyway have to do this as it very easily could have been the owners fault that the dog died.  I am in Nebraska and they are in California. If I cannot get a veterinary statement on the dog, I'm to just go on what an uneducated owner is telling me they "believe"  happened? No.  They owned the dog for a year and a replacement was offered repeatedly, when I was in no way responsible to do so as they had not provided proof that the dog passed away from a genetic condition nor had there been a vet statement that the dog in anyway had a health problem that COULD cause her death.  Was there a lack of vet care? Was she dealing with normal puppy things that a vet would not lay blame to breeding? probably.

You cannot go online with  uneducated speculation and make slanderous accusations. I have numerous puppy families that own 2 and 3 Danes from us that are thrilled with their dogs and the job I do as their breeder. They have come back to us for years and would never get a Dane from anyplace else.  This owner is making accusations that she does not have proof of any of her statements. She does not have statements from other owners saying they have had a Dane that died of a genetic condition  that they purchased from us because there are none. So I find it amazing that with not one vet statement, nor another owner writing a statement that they have had a dog die of a genetic condition , that this can be taken as anything other than garbage.  Until this owner can provide proof of any wrong doing on my part, when I have offered a remedy that I was not in any way required to offer, this is nothing but slanderous defaming  accusations . My attorney will add this to the pile of slander that she is building.

Slander :Any intentional false communication, either written or spoken, that harms a person's reputation; decreases the respect, regard, or confidence in which a person is held; or induces disparaging, hostile, or disagreeable opinions or feelings against a person.
Defamation may be a criminal or civil charge. It encompasses both written statements, known as libel, and spoken statements, called slander.

I have kept all correspondence and my repeated offers to this family. I would be happy to share with anyone. I have also kept the puppy questionaire/ contract that they completed and sent to me. I also will be happy to provide a statement from my veterinarian on the health of my Danes as well as numerous statements from families that own Danes from Niobrara. I am also happy to provide my state license number to anyone.

This is a woman that called me constantly wanting me to hold her hand through wanting to show her "unhealthy" dog and wanted to have 3 hour conversations constantly.  I have a family and dogs that need my attention and 60 other puppy families from over the years that will call with their updates or questions on feeding or vaccinations . I spend a great deal of time on the phone interviewing families and helping with rescues and Danes in need. I don't have time for 3 hour conversations constantly about "showing" . If she wants to show, go to a show. If you have a problem with your dog, go to the vet and report back to me with a vet statement. Of course I want updates. But we all will have some families that believe they are the ONLY ONE . This woman does not have children and her husband is out of the states. She doesn't have the level of work involved for her everyday that I have and I cannot be expected to always be available when she expects me to have time for her.

If it is an emergency, ABSOLUTELY I will make time. There was never an emergency, or a sick dog, or a dog that was throwing up, or had a high fever, was losing weight, or was lethargic or there would of course be vet record of her being seen ...correct??

I want to see proof as should this site want to see proof. I want to see proof that she had health problems from a vet. Not her own uneducated speculation that cannot be medically verified. I want to see proof from other owners of a Niobrara Dane that has died of a genetic condition. It has never happened  in the history of this program

This is nothing but an owner that doesn't want to be held responsible for the health of her dog at all. She has no accountability in her death, it just must be someone elses fault. If that were the case, then why not have the necropsy done??  Because it could have very easily shown that SHE was responsible for the dogs death.

I still would have made the same offer to her of another puppy, even if it was her fault, because she was heartbroken and I still would have tried to make things better for her.

Nebraska – The buyer must have the pet examined by a licensed veterinarian within 7 businesses days after receiving the animal. The law covers the consumer if one of the following conditions are met: 1) A serious health problem that the veterinarian believes existed at the time of sale is documented within 7 days 2) A serious health problem, including congenital or hereditary defects and any other contagious disease that causes severe illness or death, is diagnosed within 15 months after the date of birth of the pet. If the animal dies, the seller must refund the full purchase price upon return of the animal to the seller or an exchange for a pet animal of the buyer’s choice of equivalent value will be made, or reimbursement for reasonable veterinary fees up to the purchase price will be made. If the animal does not die, the seller must refund the purchase price or exchange the pet for one of the buyer’s choice of equivalent value and reimburse for reasonable vet fees not to exceed half of the purchase price of the animal.

I have been a much better breeder and friend than what the State of Nebraska requires me to do. She said herself that I have offered a remedy of a new puppy repeatedly.  It also says she must require proof of diagnosis....she has none. This is nothing but slanderous accusations and I want it stopped.

Oscar

AUTHOR: Irena - Wilmington (United States of America)

I purchased a puppy for the show ring from Trish. He is currently 18 months old and has only made it into the ring once! He was 12 weeks old when he enter his only puppy match. His show career was over just as fast as it started... Although no fault of mine, I was eager to show him and get him out in the ring. It started with his ears. I opted to leave his ears natural and boy were they ever natural...he could stand those things all by himself! That is not Trish's fault, it's a risk with ears whether natural or cropped, there's never a gaurantee on ears. At approx 6 months of age Oscar devloped Ectropion in his left eye and was seen by my vet. within a few months after that his eyes started to "sink" back into his eye sockets and the top of his lids started to over grow the eye. Oscar was seen by my primary vet who in turn refered him to an eye specialist where he was diagnosed with what is called pagoda eye (it happend with both eyes). This is a genetic eye issue.

Most of this happened right around mid-June when Oscar turned 1 yr old. Trish had called me to ask me something about someone. During this conversation I had told Trish what was going on with Oscar and he had an appointment with the specialist the following week. After that appointment I spoke with Trish and informed her as to what the specialist said: Oscar is blind in his left eye and is partialy blind in his right and may need surgery on his eyes in the future if Dr Bowersox thought it could restore vision in his left eye and keep sight in the right. He would not consider any surgery until at least until Oscar is 2 and his head is finished growing. Oscar requires monthly checkups to chart his progression. At Oscar's last appointment at the end of Dec 2011 it was deemed Oscar's sight could NOT be corrected by surgery after being seen by another specialist. 2 canine eye specialists stated Oscar's vision could not be corrected via surgery.

Oscar my show dog cannot be shown. He just turned 18 months old and has been nuetered due to this GENETIC eye problem. At 18 months of age Oscar only stands at 30" at the withers and is a whopping 128 pounds! Wow what a big boy he is! Oscar along with his short stature also has straight rear angles (which are basically non-exsistant) which puts him at high risk for possible tears to his CLC which will be more expensive surgery for this poor boy. Along with those Oscar also has SEVER food and enviromental allergies. With is allergies he is also now being treated for IBS.

I have sent several messages, emails and phone calls to Trish, including posting this info with pictures on Trish's Facebook wall. I have not to dated recieved return contact from Trish. When Trish sent me pics of the pups when they were young (like a week to 2 wks old) Oscar had a swollen eye and Trish said there wouldn't be a problem and she would gaurantee this puppy (Yes, I do still have the emails!!!!). If guaranteeing  this puppy meant if he has a problem she would guarantee me no further contact, then I guess she filled her guarantee!!!

Trish, since you won't return contact... PLEASE NOTE Oscar has a genetic eye problem and he is blind in his left eye and partially blind in his right!!! YOUR LINES ARE CARRYING THIS ISSUE!!! You may now wish to CERF them by a specialist and not your regular vet, to determine who (if not both parents) is the carrier!!!

It is known that after Trish was told about Oscar and his picture and story posted on her wall (never to acknoledge him or me)has breed these parents again!  Oscar is now nuetered and living with a GREAT family that loves him dearly. Shame his breeder doesn't care as much. Yes, I too have had problems with my Dane from Niobrara Great Danes and Yes, I too have been ignored by Trish Hanson. Good thing Oscar has me and a loving home to care for him!!!

Wish I knew how to post Oscar's picture to this report so you can all see his eyes.

Oscar

AUTHOR: Niobrara - Harrison (United States of America)

Irena, you know that you have never sent me an email nor have you called me to discuss Oscar. You posted a picture of him with the report that you would have to wait and see as he grew. I have the thread. That was the last I heard. Never have you contacted me to give me a final diagnosis and we could remedy the situation. Not once. Now this. Again, no vet report has been sent to me, nor has the dog been returned to me for a remedy. These posts on FB are YOUR POSTS and never did you contact me when you had a final diagnosis from a vet. This was the last that I saw about anything. You show me where you have contacted me to talk to me about a remedy.

Irena Kit-Kelso: It should, but it will be a wait and see process. Dr will go in to fix the entropion and see if he can "fix" anything else...chances are he will not, but at least with the entropion gone Oscar will have better vision and less likely to damage his corneas. We are going to have him neutered while he's under because I will not risk passing this on to pups. He's a great dog tho otherwise!

Irena Kit-Kelso:
This will make my second blue male neutered within a years time...our first is a big Euro boy who stands 37" and weighs 215# started doing clearences and found out he has SAS...He was neutered within 2 wks of this discovery! And yes Oscar i...s Blue his color is off because he was blowing coat big time!!! Hate when they shed their puppy fur!!! Spaying and neutering MUST be part of any good breeding program. Faults like Oscar's are NOT that of the Breeder (unless they where aware of the problems in the line and continued to breed it) but those of the genetic crap shot! Everything that is considered "GENETIC" cannot be the fault of a breeder... it would be like you blaming your parents and grandparents and great grandparents ETC for YOUR EVERY FLAW, because it is EXACTLY the same thing! But on the flip side a breeder should do whats right and take those "flaws" out of her lines by spaying and neutering. That's why a breeder should know their lines and genetics behind them!

Irena Kit-Kelso: I might add... I do NOT blame Oscar's breeder for his problems, it's just the luck of the draw. However, McFly's breeder is another story! She knew about the underlying heart condition and elected to breed and NEVER told anyone it was there!!! AND SHE CONTINUES TO BREED THIS LINE ANY WAYS WITH KNOWING THE "TIME BOMB" IS THERE IN HER LINE!!!

I have a Niobrara Dog

AUTHOR: Vulpine - West Winfield (United States of America)

Trish sold me a gorgeous Fawn male and I have had ZERO health problems with him.  She has been very responsive to any questions I have and very helpful if I need help.  I would happily recommend Trish as a breeder, and one of my puppy owner's has bought one of Trish's pups on my recommendation.  There are always 2 sides to every story.

Love our Dane from Niobrara

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (United States of America)

I purchased a great Dane from Trish in May of 2010. She is a beautiful 140 lb black Dane, with a silky shiny coat. Just had her 2nd birthday in march. We couldn't be happier with this dog. She makes us laugh daily, and is a social butterfly. I can't wait to get up every morning to see what she has "borrowed" from all of our neighbors. Luckily we have nice neighbors who all know and love her too. She has no health issues except eye allergies which are seasonal and treated with drops. Just like I have developed in the last 5 or 6 years myself! There are 2 sides to every story. We love our Dane and she is a wonderful funny entertaining member of our family.
