RED CARDS ISSUED TO DOGS AS A WAY OF HANDLING PROBLEMS. When I called to schedule our dogs temperament which they required, I asked whether there were many male attendants on staff because my dog had anxiety and fear issues with many men. They assured me that they only had one male on staff and that he got along well with most dogs and if it were a problem they would be able to have a female attendant work with her. Took her in for the test and she passed she has never had any aggressive issues with dogs or people. She avoids men giving them a respectable distance. The morning I dropped her off for an 8 day stay the was greeted by a male staff member who could not get her to move she was scared, unless I walked between him and her. When we got to the fence gate he dragged her to the back, and I was assured this would be ok she would be given time to adjust. (They do have an area that they segregate pups who need time to adjust, however another dog was already in that enclosure) 40 minutes after we dropped her off while we were on our way to the airport we received a call that Maxine had received 2 Red cards for growling at another dog. (I'm sure she knew what that meant even though she had never played soccer) She would have to be isolated for the remaining 8 days because of this behavior and you guessed it this call came from the other male on staff. They could have handled her after the first time she growled but they obviously just hand the dog a red card and expect that they know what it means. I had chosen this place because of the lack of cages and there was no way I could leave her in their care. Luckily I had a co-worker who was kind enough to pick her up and keep her for the 8 days.
The 6 hours she stayed at PET PLAY PLACE were probably the worst she has expereienced. I now have to work on finding out what damage they did to her psyche. Luckily she can still go to a dog park hopefully she will continue to be the sweet animal she was, although she is extremely frightened now and I took her to her Vet for a routine check after our trip and he advised she is not aggressive and her reaction was fear driven by how she was being handled. Obvioulsly the staff is ill equipped to handle an animal who is fearful or perhaps any issues.
