On 27th December 2011, I went to Best Buy #1762 to buy a chest freezer. My wife and I had wanted a new chest freezer and naturally visisted our neighborhood Best buy and found one freezer that suited our needs.
I returned to the store later and described to the sales associate the freezer I had seen earlier and he told me they had more at the back room. He brought out a new freezer and I checked it out and took it home.
Later when my wife returned from work, she figured out that the new freezer was smaller than what we had seen at the store. So we agreed to return it when both of us had the time so that we may exchange it with the bigger one we had seen. As fate would have it our work schedules kept us busy until last week on January 28th 2012. We happily packed our freezer on our truck and headed back to Best Buy to exchange and buy a bigger freezer. The shock of our lives was when the customer service lady told us that our freezer was out of return policy. What! I told her the freezer was still in its box, unopened. The Customer service lady told me I should have read the back of the receipt and that it was one day past the policy. This lady told us to put the freezer up for sale on Craigslist. Just imagine! I told her I did not ask for advice and left. We later called and spoke to the store manager but too was adamant... No refund. We are stuck with a new freezer, too small for our home needs and yet Best Buy could not have it back.
I will never shop at Best But for anything if even if its offered for free. Buyer beware. This company will rip you off.

The store's posted return policy is 30 days. Its been 31 days, it would matter if you were 1 day or 60 days past, the point is you only had 30 days to return or exchange it. The store is not ripping you off, they are following their posted return policy that they follow with every customer. So if they do your return, should they do everyone else's a day late? What about the guy that's only 2 or 3 days past the 30 days? What would be a reasonable cutoff for returns?
Plain and simple, you should have returned the freezer as soon as you realized it wasn't what you wanted. Its not best buy's fault that you sat on the freezer for a month before trying to return it.

Hope you enjoy your new freezer.

Best Buy did NOT rip you off....you pretty much did it to yourselves.
Not even shop there for a free item?....wow.

Seems to me that 30 days is a pretty generous policy for large appliance returns. Something tells me that the only real ripoff was your assumption that Best Buy's return policy was flexible. Generally speaking, it's not a good assumption to make of any retailer.
They have a valid business reason for drawing the line at 30 days. On the other hand, since they are open 7 days a week, it's unlikely that they would consider your "work schedules" reason adequate.

I respect the opinions of other consumers who intimate that I ripped myself off. I guess the point I wanted to make is that Best Buy's refund policy is too rigid for reason. If I merely wanted to upgrade to a bigger freezer at the same store and the returned product was still new and unopened what brilliant person would refuse to make a new sale? Further more I have shopped at Best Buy over the last two years for more than $2500.00 dollars. This is the type of customer they have lost. I don't mind keeping my pet freezer but I won't ever shop at Best Buy again. It is that simple. And anyone thinking about Best Buy after reading my report may want to explore refund policies of other stores as well. I guess that's my point.

- If you think the policy is too rigid, just how many days past the posted policy should they allow refunds? 1 Day, 2 Days, exactly the number of days it is before you decide to return it?
What reasons should they allow exceptions? Didn't get time, Car was in the Shop, Stuck in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?
The point is that EVERY person who wants a store to make an exception from their policy thinks that the policy is good. But at the same time they don't think it should apply to them because they are truly a "special case" in their mind.
As for your case, the work schedule "excuse" is a very weak one. First of all they were open every day for that month. Weekdays they were probably open from 10-9, weekends probably 10-7. Somehow I would think that during that month there was probably at least a few days where you could get time. Not to mention that fact that as you were getting close to the 30 days there would have been nothing keeping ONE of you from going back to the store, returning it and then going back at a later date when you both had time.
And anyone thinking about Best Buy after reading my report may want to explore refund policies of other stores as well.
- That IS a good point, you should ALWAYS know the policy of the store you are buying something from. If you don't like the policy then don't buy from that store and move on to one that is more favorable in your mind.
