Bottom Line Books book that I never ordered, now they want money Des Moines, Iowa

According to the Federal Trade Commission rules, any UNSOLICITED items that are delivered to you are considered GIFTS.  You do not have to pay for them and you DO NOT NEED TO RETURN THEM!!!

You can verify this yourself by going to the FTC website www.ftc.gov and search for unsolicited xxxx (in your case books.)

You should send these clowns a certified, RRR letter stating that you did not request such items from them and consider them to be gifts according the the FTC and that you will not pay for them and will not return them.

Also include a statement to the effect that if they turn this over to a collection agency or report it as a debt to the credit reporting agencies you will interpret that to be a willful attempt by them to commit fraud, and to inflict emotional and economic harm which you will promptly report to the appropriate government agencies and seek judicial remedies.

IF they are fool enough to attempt to collect or report these debts, take your copy of the letter you sent and your signed reciept from the USPS to any compentent attorney and sue them!  Also report them to the FTC and make out a criminal fraud complaint with the US postal inspector and (if they are not in your home state) the FBI.

I am very familiar with the book in question and the company.

I also know that you actually requested the book, whether you know it or not.

You requested a "freebie" and at that time agreed to further books. It was in the "fine print" on the card you mailed in for your freebie.

They WILL put this on your credit report, if it isn't there already. It depends on if it has moved from inside collections to third party collections yet.

The best thing to do is to say you never got the book, and then demand that they prove that you did, unless you already talked to them and let them know you have it.

If you already blabbed to them that you did get it, you will have no choice but to return it, at your expense.

Always beware of "freebies", as they are NEVER "free".

This situation does not fall in to the "unsoliced merchandise" rule previously stated. You did request the book, although you were not aware that you did.
