Best Buy Failed to Inform Austin, Texas
*Consumer Comment: A good deal

My fiance and I, originally bought a product on a credit card at Best Buy in Austin, TX. This was a while back. When we signed up for the credit card we were told that we'd have 18 months to pay off the merchendise "Interest Free"; well little did we know, and little did the employees know, after the promotional time period was expired, if the merchendise wasn't paid in full, they would tack on ALL, yes ALL of the interest that we WOULD have paid had we NOT been under the little 18 month promotional thing (not sure what it is really called).
So, by the time the promotional time period was up, we had a little over a hundred dollars to pay, and Best Buy and their credit company tacked on over $600 onto our bill!!!! I tried calling and disputing this, because we had absolutely no idea this was going to happen...and of course they said that there was nothing they could do about it, and that we'd be required to pay that amount in full.
I then went to Best Buy to speak with them in person, and the employees were also shocked, because THEY didn't even know that this is how it worked!!!
Basically, its obvious, that when they were trained they were NOT informed about this either, I even had a Best Buy employee tell me that, now that they know how that promotional thing REALLY works, they'd make sure that they discouraged other customers from using this "Deal", because of how wrong they thought it was!!!
This is just like theft if you ask me.
Best Buy has to be the worst company to do business with that I've ever dealt with...and on top of that, when you call their Customer Service Number, they obviously have outsourced their call center to another country (cheap labor), because the people answering the lines are so hard to understand its rediculous.

interest free offers that didn't spell out the terms and that included the ENTIRE amount had to be paid by the specified date and if not interest would be added for the entire time and for the entire amount.
When did you read the agreement on this offer?....oh not yet either, right?

See that part you posted concerning PAY OFF THE MERCHANDISE, interest free within 18 months.
PAY OFF does not mean the same as pay on the merchandise...you goofed.
Don't come back and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about...YOU posted that statement.

I have to agree with Ken. Even on Best Buy's website (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/null/null/pcmcat163300050048.c?id=pcmcat163300050048) concerning promotional purchases it is stated that you have to have it paid in full in 18 months. You should have paid it in full in 16 months to make sure that you would avoid this. If you could not pay it in 16 months, then you should not have bought it.
This is standard practice on ALL promotional cards from anybody.
It was in the fine print on the credit application you filled out or on the back of the purchase slip. It is not the responsibility of the store employees to tell you anything UNLESS you ask.
They are not the credit card company. The card is issued by GE Money Bank.
Ignorance is no excuse. This report should have never been filed.

I certainly believe that you didn't understand the deal but I do NOT believe that the employees didn't know it and that they would recommend people not use the promotion. It's a very common promotion and has been around a long time. We bought our first plasma TV from Best Buy years ago using that promotion. It was long enough ago that I don't remember exactly when it was.
It's actually a very good deal and we have used it more than once. The thing is, you have to pay attention to what you're doing and make sure you know exactly when the 'interest free' period is up. Pay it off a couple months early and you have paid no interest. A good deal.
However, I'm sure they expect that some people will not pay attention and will not pay it off in time and will be assessed all of the interest accrued. That pays for the people who do pay attention.
I'm curious, what did you think - we'd have 18 months to pay off the merchendise "Interest Free - meant?
