BEST BUY ALERT!!!

My husband and I went to Best Buy (in Las Cruces, NM) in May 2006. We were looking to buy a washing machine. When we found the washing machine we liked we talked to the salesperson on the floor. We were informed that the machine we had been looking at was the only one they had. The salesperson also informed us that they were reducing inventory and changing what stock they carried, therefore the washing machine we were looking at was discounted $200 since it would be sold out of the box. My husband and I accepted this and purchased our new washing machine (a Maytag Neptune – GREAT MACHINE BY THE WAY) for $1000 (after taxes, etc).

Since purchasing the machine we have had to service it three times. The third time we needed service Best Buy informed us we needed to go through Maytag as our washer was under a year old. After getting the washer serviced we actually learned (thanks to our GREAT and WONDERFUL service man) that the washer we had purchased as NEW was actually two years old and no longer under Maytag warranty.

Well, I promptly contacted Best Buy to fix this situation. After all, they never advertise that they sell USED merchandise. Best Buys response? We purchased the washer out of the box therefore we should have know. (Gives new meaning to buyer be ware). Best Buy refused to exchange our washer for a new one. The only resolution we got was (1) they paid us the money we had to pay the repairman and (2) next time the washer breaks, and then they will replace it. Best Buy never said sorry, nothing.

I have since learned that Best Buy is known to sell used merchandise to their customers without letting them know. It may be wrong of me, but I feel better that I'm not the only one they've screwed. However, I think EVERYONE should be aware of this, and personally, I (and my entire family) will never ever shop at Best buy again.

So, if you ever need anything (like computers, appliances, electronics, etc.) DON'T go to Best Buy. You never know what you're going to get.

Funny....the Best Buy I shop at sells washers and dryers

AUTHOR: Cyd - Las Vegas (U.S.A.)

Maybe the employee better double check where he works. Best Buy DOES sell appliances, I have a receipt right in front of me for a Whirlpool Duet washer. I also have the service Plan folder with Best Buy's logo on it. I also purchased a carpet shampooer that same day. Bet you don't sell those either.....lol.

Must have been a store masquerading as Best Buy, whose sells the Best Buy Performance Plan and charges these purchases to my Best Buy Card and prints a receipt that says "welcome to Best Buy."

As for the original poster, Maytag should warranty the machine from the date of purchase, not the date it was placed on the sales floor. I would suggest you contact Maytag Corporate offices to resolve this problem as well as notify Best Buy corporate of what Maytag has told you.

I just referred to the Warranty for my Mayatg Range and dishwasher and it states that the warranty is from the "Original retail purchase date," The number I have for them is 1-800-688-9900. Good luck resolving your situation.

I bought a washer and dryer at Best Buy

AUTHOR: Heather - Hopatcong (U.S.A.)

They DO sell washers & Dryers. We never had any problems with ours, but we did buy a set there.

My suggestion on dealing with Best Buy is to keep asking for manager after manager. Eventually someone will care enough to help you.

Same thing happened to me but.........

AUTHOR: Melody - Island Lake (U.S.A.)

I had a simalar thing happen to me but ours was a fridge.. We had Best Buy intallers come out and hook up our fridge and the water line for the icemaker.. all went well for a month. I was hosting my parents anniversary picnic here at my home. Went to the store and spent $1200 on burgers brats etc. Woke up the next morning to find that there was an inch of water on the floor. not only had the fridge filter broke during the night It had burnt out the motor , filled with water and was at a balmy 68 degress in the fridge. I called BB and they refered me to Frigidaire since it was only a month old.. Frigidare sent me back to BB since they installed it. We went round and round with both insurance co's.

Our hardwood floors were ruined.. the water leaked into my sons room in the basement ruining the celing, the carpet and the walls. They were just covered in water and all the juices from the meats that were in the fridge and freezer. I actually had one lady tell me when I asked what I was going to do for food since i didnt have a fridge at that time for an additional month since the insurance co's were fighting, I should just take the family to MCDonaldsevery day!! We went with out a fridge for the ENITRE summer (may to Sept) when we finallt got the ins check it barely covered the repairs and no reimbursment of any kind for all the lost food etc. ( no reimbursment for food I had receipts even, since "its a fridge they go out" )

I was fianlly told when they were delivering my new fridge that BB and Frigidare KNEW the filters had issues and sold them anyway hoping no one would file a claim.. Guess no one had over $7000 in damage done... I hope you get everything resolved and NO ONE has to go thru the nightmare we went thru ... I will NEVER buy another thing at Best Buy Nor will I purchase any product made by Figidare or their subsidiaries..

To the best buy employeee

AUTHOR: Bill - Fort Pierce (U.S.A.)

Maybe your Best Buy doesn't sell washers and dryers, but the one near me does. I have no problem with Best Buy, but an employee response should at least be correct. Maybe the employee needs to be trained properly as to the merchandise carried.

Tamara, WHO said the machine was used?

AUTHOR: Steve [Not A Lawyer] - Bradenton (U.S.A.)

Tamara,

You bought a reduced price floor model as an open box item. This should tell you that it has been around for awhile as they told you it was the last one available. It was a demo/floor model. You knew that before buying it as you accepted the $200 discount!

The service person said it was 2 years old according to your own statement & never said it was USED, right?. Who said it was used?

Just because something is 2 years old, does not automatically mean it is used.

I think you ASSUMED it was used when he said it was not new [being 2 years old].

I have never seen best buy sell used merchandise.

Floor models not the same as used

AUTHOR: Danielle - Champaign (U.S.A.)

Tamara-washing machines that are floor models 99.9% of the time are not used. Best Buy does not have the functional capacity for floor models to be operational. However, Steve, Best Buy does sell used merchandise on a regular basis. Other than floor models in Appliances, the majority of "open items" you see stickered on the floor, have in fact been opened, used and returned. Next time, Tamara, I would do a little more research and ask more questions before spending $1000 on an item that you are getting at a discount.

No one is actually comprehending

AUTHOR: John - Califon (U.S.A.)

The OP wrote:

"After getting the washer serviced we actually learned (thanks to our GREAT and WONDERFUL service man) that the washer we had purchased as NEW was actually two years old and no longer under Maytag warranty."

Nowhere in that statement does it indicate the unit was used-even though it technically was by the OP thus rendering any possible diagnosis to such fact beforehand as irrelevent.
The OP ASSUMES it used by just being told the unit was out of warranty. Clearly a misconstrued assumption.

If you buy a vehicle, have it trailered to your residence, and store it in a barn-never,ever driven, and the warranty expires, is the unit considered used? Hardly.

The current employee is very confused

AUTHOR: Jamie - Midlothian (U.S.A.)

Best Buy most certainly does sell washers and dryers and has in every store of theirs I have ever been in.

Maybe he really works for --- and got confused because they don't sell them.

if not, then he is not a ringing endorsement to the brain power of BB employees.

sorry, …from this Rallowing you to give a competitors name would instigate others to just file against their competition, to only come back later to suggest their company… your comments on this policy are welcome! The ex employee

AUTHOR: Danielle - Champaign (U.S.A.)

Ken from Orangevale, California is not a Best Buy employee. He works for a company called Best Buy Golf Supply which is not affiliated with the Best Buy in question. Sometimes when people file reports about Best Buy Golf Supply, it is erroneously posted under Best Buy electronics.

One Good Option

AUTHOR: James - St. Paul (U.S.A.)

I'm gonna try to keep this short. If you do a search on the internet for lawsuits involving Best Buy you'll come up with at least 2. One in the state of Ohio and one in Wisconsin. The AGs in these states have filled suits against Best Buy for false business practices because some Best Buys were selling used items as new which is deceptive. If you are interested you should contact these your state AG and inform them of this. Make sure you have proof that Best Buy sold you the items as "NEW" and a statement from Maytag about the exact age of your washer and dryer which should show some conflictions between the actual age and what Best Buy says.

Best Buy ripped me off too!

AUTHOR: Meg - Manorville (U.S.A.)

I also bought an "open box" washing machine and dryer from Best Buy. I was told the same thing that they were just reducing inventory, not that it was used. It was out of the box to be displayed! It gets delivered and already has a service work order attached that said "Lenny -parts installed works fine!" Lenny lied. After only 3 months, it has stopped working. Called for repair and it took 2 weeks to come.Part took another 2 weeks. Of course wrong part and I am now on week five....Four adults and two dogs=lots of laundry. We have spent more money buying clothes and at laudromats than was worth the amount they took off the washer! Customer service has been very nice..but i am still out of a washer for five weeks and counting....thinking I'm going back to Sears or PC Richards next time.
