I responded to an ad in the craigslist CNG auto section in the Raliegh, NC area regarding a 1999 Honda Civic for sale for $2,500. The ad had a VIN# that I verified on Carfax.

I received a couple of emails from the seller, David Habercom, telling me that the car was at an ebay warehouse in San Jose, CA and they would handle the transaction because he was short on time. I agreed to use ebay. He said he'd contact them and ebay would then contact me.

I received an official looking email from the email address: ebay@vehicle-purchaseprogram.com The email had a case id# and fax number. Everything looked official. The method of payment to be used was through a Money Gram Office. The email said that the seller would not receive any money until I received the car and had 3 days to inspect the car. The car was to be shipped to me by DAS Auto Transport; which is a valid company.

I contacted ebay and that is not a valid ebay email address. Ebay would use paypal, not money gram. And according to the Money Gram Office website a person would be able to pick up money 10 minutes after the sender sends it. I also found this same car ad on multiple Craigslist websites throughout the US.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Research first

AUTHOR: Dianne - San Diego (U.S.A.)

I always take the email or phone number from the Craigslist ad and Google it. More than likely, you will see numerous entries for the same car for sale all over the country. Go back to the original ad and 'FLAG' it.

#2 Individual Responds

The Real David Habercom Responds

AUTHOR: David habercom - Knoxville (U.S.A.)

I regret that someone used my name to run a scam.  I live in Tennessee, not California, and my reputation as a fine art photographer is well established in this part of the country.  As it happens, I have two web sites, one of them davidhabercom.com, which contain more than enough information to fabricate a false identity, but also to verify my true ID.  If you Google my name, you will find 128,000 references, so I am highly visible and easy to find.  I should think a scammer would at least have sense enough to use an obscure name.  I am glad that someone reported the scam and glad that he didn't get ripped off.
