I took my 1992 Ford Escort for a Tune-up and Ended Up Paying Over A $1000 to get my car back!

On December 6, 2005 I took my 1992 Ford Escort into Sunset Ford for service because the car was missing and backfired. I was told I needed new sparkplug wires and the fuel inejction needed flushing. I said ok do the work.

I went to pick up my car on Dec 7, 2005, paid $422 without complaint and got into my to drive away and the driver's side seatbelt restraint would not return to the locked position. I pointed this out to Joe. I also told him it was working fine when I dropped the car off.

I pointed out that he made no mention of the seatbelt not working in his initial assestment of repairs needed on my car. He said things just happen to these old cars and that it was not the dealerships fault that the seatbelt was not working and they would not pay to fix it.

It was obvious the track had been damaged by something obstructing the carridge and not allowing it to go to the closed position. Like a mechanic reaching in through the car window to turn on the ignition, which activates the seatbelt restraint. The carridge stopped in the middle along the top of the window. It cost me another $693 go get that fixed.

Sunset Ford refused to pay to fix the seatbelt restraint even though they could not explain how the track had been damaged while in their possession.

I have owned Fords all my driving life and I have never experienced a dealership like Sunset Ford. Do not leave your with them without making them sign-off on what is not wrong with your car. Don't expect help from their managers. They just refer you to someone who is out at the moment.

Beware of Sunset Ford Service Advisors like Joe Price!

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Why even go to a dealer?

AUTHOR: Steve - Bradenton (U.S.A.)

$422 is about twice the amount those repairs would have cost at any other shop. A dealership should only be used for warranty work, or specialized work that no one else will do.

You have a very common car that parts and service are cheap for. Pep Boys or a similar shop could have done the plug wires and fuel injector cleaning for about $150 total parts and labor. $200 on the outside.

They have good reasoning on that seatbelt carriage assembly as the car is 14 model years old. How long do you really expect things to last? In any case, I would have never paid $693 to fix that. You could have got one for probably $50 at a salvage yard and done it yourself in about an hour.

It's all about choices I guess.

Interesting

AUTHOR: Cory - San Antonio (U.S.A.)

What's a 1992 ford escort worth nowadays? A couple of hundred dollars?
