I purchased a 2000 Toyota Corolla in 2004 from CarMax. Three days after the purchase I went back with the car because the clutch and brakes were making noise. They asked me to come back a few days later, but I was traveling. Every time I called they were booked. I was told to take it to any Toyota dealership and get it repaired through their warranty.
"CarMax warranty does not pay" said the dealer.
I went back to CarMax and raised hell. At this point, I have changed the battery three times, the seat belts sensor was acting up, the rear left light bulb burning up every other week.
Ten months passed before I could get the car in. And after keeping the car for three days, they told me they could not replace the clutch because I had the car too long. They would not replace the brakes for same reason. The battery was cheap and they didn't know how to fix the lights or sensor.
I am a woman, and I know they treated wrong. I canceled the warranty. When I told them that the car was paid off they kept half of the warranty refund, and sent the rest to the bank I financed the car through.

Hi. I do not at any point intend to call you stupid. but just explaining stuff to you from a carmax technician's point of view. I myself am a Carmax Tech. first of all you have to understand that you are buying a USED vehicle. at carmax we do a 125+ point inspection on things that we see wrong with your vehicle on an ALMOST 2 hour inspection. in 2 hours we can not possibly deeply diagnose your vehicle. and if something happens after we finish reconditioning your vehicle then it can't possibly be our fault entirely. like i said, its a used vehicle. something can go wrong before you leave our parking lot. understand? if you want less problems then simply buy a new vehicle.
2nd of all, we work on almost every make and model. we can not possibly be experts on every car. some of us come from specific dealershipts (ford, chrysler, chevrolet, toyota, etc.) and know how to work on whatever make we came from. other dealers train their techs SPECIFICALLY to the car they work on. we at carmax are generic technicians. we do not specialize in ONE make. its impossible for us to know everything about every car.
3rd since we work on nearly every make and model. it is extremely expensive to buy every tool (which can range form 3 dollars to thousands and thousands of dollars) for every vehicle, which is why we can not fix every car, and why we send cars to other dealerships that have those tools.
and last, i have worked for 2 separate carmax locations. and I will agree with you that not everyone will be helpful. because i have seen employees who have horrible skills or bad customer service. so i apologize that you have run into them.
but like i said, its a used vehicle. you WILL have problems

I know I purchased an USED car. Done before and will do it again, but never from CarMax.
I can be called whatever you wan to, but when I pay $12,000.00 for a car that only has 50+ thousand miles, the less I will expect is to have breakes.
What points do you all check when you can not detect bad breakes and clotch?. It doesn't take an expert to determine that. To me the car was not checked at all.
In my case it was worse than brakes and clotch. The car had an electrical problem and a bad sensor as well. Can the technicians detect that even if they don't have the tools to fix it?
Based on what you said, CarMax should alert customers about having "Generic technicians who can not fix every car" and do not have every tool.
CarMax should not sell cars that they can not fix and even less, sent people to other dealerships when their warranty sucks(don't pay)and other dealerships will not accept it.
I left several messages on several managers voicemails and never received a call back. I had to go to the store everytime I wanted to talk to someone, then they wanted to be nice.
I ended up paying for everything, was not refunded all the money I paid for a warranty I was not able to use, and did receive directly the money left, I had to track the check down.
In other words, CarMax lost me as a customer and will not refer a single person to them. My experience with them was the worse I ever had.
