I rented a Camry on Jan. 3rd from Hertz in Boca. I signed a contract for $442 with unlimited mileage and a return date of Jan. 15th (approx. $37/day).

I eventually drove to Sarasota to visit friends. On the morning of the 15th (same day car was due back in Boca), I called to inquire how much it would cost for me to keep the car until the 17th and return it to Hertz in Sarasota. I was told the fee would come to $75 per day.

I kept the car for two more days and returned it in Sarasota. My credit card bill arrived and I was charged $1,043.03 (a 136% increase).

After leaving 3 voicemail msgs requesting a copy of my bill (with no response), I finally reached an acct. rep. at Hertz. She explained that when I called Hertz on the 15th, her records showed that I was quoted a fee of $75 for "every day" (translation: my previous quote of $442 would now become void and I would be billed retroactively $75 per day for the previous 12 days). I then explained that at no time did the rep mention anything about my previous quote and that I would basically be starting a new contract. I told her that I'd like to dispute the charge. She told me that she would file it but basically, because the rep entered into the computer that she quoted me $75 "each day", she covered her bases and I probably wouldn't be reimbursed.

Apparently, the rep I spoke with on the 15th thought ahead about my possibly misinterpreting her word game and decided to record that she used the phrase "each day" in our conversation. I guess they can void and renogotiate contracts without telling you in the hope that you won't notice. In my case, I must have rented a Camry for $300 "each day". Hate to see how much a Hertz limo would cost.

Hertz Refunded $438.80

AUTHOR: Rhonda - Houston (U.S.A.)

On 3.21.06 I received an email from Hertz stating that the charges were correct, however, as "a gesture of goodwill", they would be crediting $438.80 to my credit card.
