I went to Lang Auto Sports after seeing an ad on Craigslist.com for a car I was very interested in. It was a 1993 Jeep Cherokee. My boyfriend and I test drove it, and then decided to give it a day or so to think about it. We returned the next day prepared to purchase. The window price was $3,999.99, but they advertised it for $2,499.99 online so they were obligated to give me that price. I told them I had $2,000 cash to put down, and they were willing to do a small in house loan to pay off the rest, which was about $900. It was going to be 2 payments, the first to be due 1 month after purchase date (11/24/2007). They then were pressuring me by saying I had to get full coverage insurance. I told them I couldn't afford to do that, and they said that was fine. After I had shown some hesitation, they asked why. I simply told them that I "Didn't want to get screwed over." I told them this because I figured they saw me as a young 21 year old girl whom they could take advantage of. Don (the Finance Manager) and Travis (the salesman) both stated multiple times, "You can trust us," and "This is a good car." I believed them. I paid the $2,000.00 cash down, and i got the keys. When I was driving the car home, my boyfriend was following behind me and we noticed that my brake lights and left blinker didn't work (both worked when I test drove). So we stopped at Schucks and replaced them. Everything was fine for the first week, then i noticed how bald the tires were. My parents said "They shouldn't have sold you this car with tires like that." I told them i was going to replace them for christmas, so i wasn't that worried. A few days later the cover to the glove compartment fell off. Then, the next week I was driving to work and the driver's side window fell into the door! I was still optimistic. The following week I was driving from my place of work to another store (on Highway 167 heading South) to borrow some items and the engine of my car blew up. I was in complete shock. After towing the car home, I got online and researched to see if there were any lemon laws that applied to my situation. I found out that because I signed "As-Is" I was out of luck. But I was sure that there was something that could be done since this car didn't even last me 30 days. I called them the next day and asked to talk to the manager, which was Don. After having to call multiple times I finally was able to talk to him. After I explained the situation he said, "Well what would you like me to do about it?" I then began telling him that It was insane that they sold me this car, claiming it was excellent and now here it is completely totalled. He then said that he would call the title owner and cancel the loan so I didn't have to make the remaining payments, and he would call after that had been taken care of. A few days went by, and I began to think he was blowing me off so I called. Every single time I called I heard a different excuse as to why I couldn't talk to Don. One time in particular I called right after he went to lunch, and I was told to call in an hour. I called exactly an hour later and Travis (my salesman) told me that Don was off that day. A few days later Don called and said he still hadn't heard from the title owner, but he was curious as to what I wanted. I said $2,000 or a car of equal price. He said he wasn't obligated to do anything to help me because I signed As-Is. I told him I understood, but that I took a job in Kent only because I had purchased what I thought was a relible vehicle. What was I supposed to do? He said I could come in and pick a new car and he would give me "one helluva deal." I told him all my savings went into that jeep. He said, "oh." It has been almost another week and I haven't heard from him. My calls don't get returned.

This is the exact complaint i filed with the Better Business Bureau. The case was opened on Jan. 2, 2008 and closed Jan. 29, 2008 after two failed attempts on getting a response from the company.

Why should the dealer do anything for you?

AUTHOR: Dave - Jacksonville (U.S.A.)

You bought a 15 year old Jeep Cherokee, which, 15 years ago, was a piece of crap. You didn't have it checked out by a certified mechanic. That was your second mistake. If you had it checked out, you would know there was something wrong with the motor, and wouldn't have bought it.

An engine blows usually because of water in the oil, or no oil. Did you even check the oil in the Jeep? No, you just take their word for it that everything was fine. Yes, they preyed on you because you were young and naive. Don't let it happen again. Next car you buy, have it checked out completely by a reputable repair shop.

The dealer is not responsible for your engine. You bought a 15 year old car as-is.

water in the oil

AUTHOR: Rindi - Electric City (United States of America)

Just so you know.... a motor does not blow up because of water in the oil.

#3 Owner of Company

Always two sides to the story.

AUTHOR: Naima Lang - lynnwood (United States of America)

Tatum R purchased our Jeep after test driving and checking it out over the course of 2 separate days. We had in-housed financed the balance of $891.41, so we asked if they can get full coverage insurance to protect the unpaid balance, which we had said all banks require.  Tatum could not offered at the time, which we said was ok.

When Tatum had said the Jeep blew up, she wanted to return it and get her money back for a full refund on her money,  we had explained that she did buy it “As-Is” and that she just could not return it. We understood her frustration, and we had mentioned that our mechanic would look at it and see how much it would cost to fix. We had also offered her another vehicle at a discounted price, at no extra cost to her. We had also had told her that the balance owed, she would not have to pay and that we would just apply that to the repairs.   Tatum never brought the jeep to us, so we had sent the title to her on 4/17/08, and the $891.41 would not be sent in for collections.  Being that she lived very far away made it difficult to resolve.

We had no Idea that this jeep would brake down, being that it is a 14 year old Jeep, there are several Wear items that can brake with no warning. I  as the owner would never sell any car or truck knowing that the motor would soon be blowing up.

Thank you,   Naima Lang
