I made an offer to purchase a used vehicle at Planet Dodge and in my offer was xxxxx amount +TTL. My offer was accepted and a deposit taken. I went back the very next morning to finish up the paperwork and take delivery of the auto. At the finance desk I was asked to sign forms for services supposedly included in the purchase price after two of these forms I ask to see the final settlement sheet before we went any further and realized they managed to slide in over $2000.00 in additional fees aka as dealer installed options and plans. I of course immediately refused and demanded my deposit back if stated fees were not taken off. My deposit was refunded and I lost over 2 hours of my life to these guys. Very very deceitful practices at Planet Dodge buyer beware!

What you describe is standard practice in the industry. It is the finance guy's job to try and pad as many extras onto the contract as possible. That's how he makes his living. It works very well as a profit center for dealerships because a lot of people don't bother reading before they sign.
Just be aware that if you decide to buy elsewhere, you're very likely to see the same practice.

An invoice is written. A deposit is paid. The deposit and balance due are noted on the invoice. If the buyer pays a deposit without a proper invoice the seller can alter the agreement. To avoid this, get an invoice indicating the total, deposit and balance due at the time the deposit is paid. Duh.
