You went out and spent, I guess, four to five figures for this car, right?  Here's what you said, and I quote exactly:  "I didn't realize what he had done until I got home and read the paperwork"!  Do you actually think this is the way to do business?  You signed on the so-called "dotted line" but didn't even bother to READ what you were signing BEFORE you signed it?

Should dealerships be honest?  Of course they should!  And consumers should read what they are signing before they obligate themselves!  If you would have done that, then we wouldn't be here right now, would we???

But this does not take any legitimacy away from this complaint. The dealer should have verbally informed the customer of the changes made..especially if  losing any warranty and/or paying an additional amount.

The customer was called back hours after the car was brought home...it should have been a done deal when the car was driven off the lot.

Lots of dealers do this it seems, and its should not be legal...well at the very least not tolerated. I had it happen to me once...and I vowed, if I ever leave a dealership with a car again, and they try to get me back in there to change any of the agreement or terms, the keys are slammed on the desk and the deal is OFF.

That is really the only way to handle these blood suckers. If any "re-working" needs to be done after the vehicle was purchased, then that means something was done wrong to begin with...not your fault...theirs, so let them pay the difference or give a full refund/return of trade in and deal off...plus pay YOU for your time and inconvenience.

The industry has a name for this unethical practice-spot delivery.

This is when the dealer lets you take the vehicle even though there is NO SIGNED FINANCING AGREEMENT (between buyer and lender) in place.  Then, at a later date, they call the buyer to come back and redo the paperwork (usually at a higher rate, higher down, more BS extras, etc) in order to "get the loan approved."

This should be illegal in every State!!!

The best way to avoid this is to NOT ACCEPT the vehicle if there is NO SIGNED AGREEMENT between you and the LENDER!

because without FRAUD & DECEPTION, most Car dealerships would go out of business due to a drastic reduction in profits which are necessary to keep them afloat.

   You forget that we live in a society where instant gratification is everyone's right.   Can you imagine the howls of protest that would result if people could not immediately drive home in their new car?    Given that most financial institutions do not process loan applications on weekends, no one who bought a car on a weekend would be able to take it home (unless they paid with a suitcase full of cash).   I'm afraid our society would not stand for it.

but..I would MUCH prefer leaving a dealership pissed off because the financing was not approved, then leave with a nice new car..my trade in is GONE..and then be called back in to be told I was not approved.

I can't imagine anyone lodging a legitimate complaint stating they were simply not approved for a car loan...but it is very easy to understand why someone would lodge a complaint if they take a new car home..and are called back to the dealership at a later date to be informed they do not qualify for the vehicle.

Not only should this be illegal, but I am actually surprised it is not already illegal. This is the kind of situation that encourages people to launch a brick through a sales floor window..and actually have justification to do so. Not saying that is how I would handle it..but I could understand the desire for some to do so if subjected to this tactic.

Quite a few years ago, my wife went to purchase a used Mustang, naturally I went along, we found the car she wanted, at a fair price we could afford,

I told them there was a power steering leak, they fixed it (New pressure hose, a ten buck part) and the next day we drove it home.

Mind you She (At the time) was a bookkeeper for a major bank and as an employee had the financing approved beforehand, so all we had to do was find a suitable car and drive away.

Yup you guessed it, a few days later the dealership called and tried to pull the "Financing is not Approved" scam on us, I just laughed at them and hung up.

They tried repeatedly to get us back, and each time they called I just laughed at them louder and louder.

Finally a cop called and told me that  "We had Stolen the Car".

I told him exactly what was really going on, and he was quite pissed that they had tried to use the cops in a scam. He said "I'll take care of this" and hung up.

Shortly the dealership was Calling to tell me "A mistake had been made (Mind you we had been paying the bank for 4 months at this point) and I told them "Yes, and you made it".

End result the dealership closed, the salesman and finance guy went to Jail, and we never heard from hem again.

So the Story Moral is "Have financing approved BEFORE YOU LOOK" and "When they try to call you back in, Call the cops and don't go back".

And it was also on a Mustang...but a brand new one.

It was my first new car and I was very young..but had a good credit rating because when my trade in was done..they consider it "payed off".

Nice Black 5.0 LX  5 speed notchback...loved the car, just what I wanted. Now this was the second dealership I was at. The first dealership (which was next door to where I worked at the time and they knew me well), told me I did not qualify for what I wanted...which was $1000.00 down. I was not happy, but looking back they did the right thing...well I knew that a week after another dealer qualified me.

This second dealership said they had a Mustang and I qualify for it for $1000.00 down.

Before I knew it the car was running out front and I was the new owner..signed everything..financing etc.

A week later I am told I need to put another thousand down. I was very young and did not understand laws and ethics etc..but I did not have the money. They told me to post date a check which I did because I was not wise enough at the time to simply refuse. They deposited the check 2 weeks earlier then I post dated it which caused an overdraft and the check was returned.

They covered the overdraft and ask me to write another check and I refused. The bastards took me to court...and won, I had to give them another $1000.00. But this was only because I was naive enough to write them a check the first time...No dealer will EVER get away with this again from me....I drive off when the deal is done..they want to change anything later that is their problem..not mine.
