On Dec. 30th , 2008 i brought my car into Number One tire in warwick to get it State Inspected. I was told that it would be a couple of hours so i left my phone number and left / walked home. About an Hour Later the phone rand and it was number one tire calling. I was informed that my car needed the number two air injection pump replaced and had to be replaced for me to get an inspection. Of course the first thing i said was " How Much " The manager said to me " are you sitting down " He said the pump would be $500.00 and two hours labor your looking at around $900.00 I said well if it has to be done then i have no other choice. OK go ahead and do it and when will it be done. He said this afternoon.
After i got off the phone i thought to myself $900.00 seems awfull steep, let me call the dealer and see what they say so i immediatly called number one tire back and told them to " hold on, don't do anything just yet i want to call the dealer first and get another price " They said OK so i called the dealer and they told me that they could install the pump for $379.00 Total, Parts and Labor.
I made an appointment and called number one tire back and told them i would be there in ten minutes to pick up my car. Well when i got there to pick up my car i was told that i must pay $125.00 and i said for what. I was told " Because i had to look at your car" No i feel like i was held up with a gun. They had my car and the only way to get it back was to pay. P.S I also found out from the dealer that my car is still covered under warranty and it will not cost anything. You would think that a honest businessman in the community would of told you that. I have been robbed.

giving the tire store authorization to fix the pump, then calling the dealer to compare prices. Once you give that authorization they can begin work and charge you for labor, even if you change your mind later. Look at it this way, the dealer charged you for pump because he had to set aside work hours for your car. Work hours he could otherwise dedicate to another customer.
You make a good point about specialty auto repair places (tire, muffler, etc.). Typically when you bring your car in for a minor item, they will inevitably tell you something else needs to be done. That's why if I need to fix a flat tire, I will change it myself and bring only the tire in, and put the fixed tire back on myself. As far as whether or not the repair they suggest actually needs to be done, I look at it this way: if the car is working, I have time to get a second opinion or find a cheaper fix.

Many years ago my trusted (!) mechanic told me I needed 4 new tires. I knew that to be very unlikely so I brought my car to Number One Tire (N.O.T) to have the tires checked. They told me that the tires were fine and off I went. Since then I have brought my car there for inspections, tires (different car) and service. Recently I had a problem with the heat in my 2002 Subaru. I brought it to N.O.T and after checking it out, Joe, the manager, told me that this was a known problem with Subaru and he printed out a letter for me detailing the problem. There was a head gasket leak and it would be very costly to fix. He urged me to go to the dealer because he felt it was something that they should fix with no charge to me. I went to the dealer and after checking my VIN number was told that my car was not affected by that letter but they would check with Subaru to see if they could get approval to fix it. They did and fixed it free of charge - a 1 1/2 day job!! My point is that if Joe had not told me about the letter I NEVER would have known and would have had to pay probably over $1000 to have it fixed. I would recommend Number One Tire without hesitation.
