I purchased a Ford Taurus 3 and a half years ago. The transmission on the car went out last week after only 58,000 miles of driving. I was shocked when I went to my dealer and found out that the pwoertrain warranty only covered 3 year/36,000 miles and I'd have to pay $2500 for an overhaul. I had piurchased in the past several Ford vehicles (Taurus, mustang, gran torino) and had never had transmission problems until I put over 100,000 miles on the car. I've owned a Hyundai and used thier 7/70000 power train warranty and now that Suzuki, Honda, Toyota and even US Chrysler all offer 7/70 or 10/100 on their powertrains. Why doesnt Ford back thier cars as well as overseas companies and Chrysler? Why cannot Ford build a transmission that will last more than 3.5 years? If I've owned 5 cars and never had transmission problems until 110,000 or more miles, so I do not think that it is not my driving style that caused the transmission to need to be overhauled.

AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, FORD SHOULD GO BANKRUPT BECAUSE THEY CANNOT BUILD OR BACK THIER CARS AS WELL AS THEIR COMPETITORS. ADAPT OR GO EXTINCT, FORD CANNOT ADAPT SO THEY NEED TO BE MADE EXTINCT.

Mechanical things break

AUTHOR: Dave - WR (U.S.A.)

While 58K isn't a lot of miles for a transimission it is mechanical and mechanical things do fail. Your other Ford vehicles served you well unfortunately this one did not. I don't think a transmission failure and only 36K warranty is grounds to have an auto maker close up shop.

As for the other auto makers, the high milage warranties don't impress me. Since most vehicles will run over 100,000 miles without any major powertrain repairs needed. So how many customers get to use the warranty? I personally would like to see the data on how many people actually get to use those factory warranties against those who don't

We all know people who have cars and the only time they had an oil change is when the oil light came on and yet they still get over 100K miles on them.

I feel the high milage warranties are done to give people that warm fuzzy feeling that a vehicle must be good if they will place a 100K warranty on it.

Case in point, My car is going into the shop monday to have the tranny rebuilt. This is the first major repair. I now have 166,000 miles on it.
The only other repairs were the altenator and water pump, all changed after 130,000 miles (I do a lot of driving). Most of the Vehicles I've had were over 150K when I got rid of them. My last one had 189K and I gave it to my son who drove it another year, With no major repairs. For someone like me if auto makers want to impress me they should offer a 150,000 or 175,000 mile warranty to the original owner.

For what its worth, I understand your frustration and it would be nice if a auto maker would stand behind their product a bit better when there is only 58K on it
