Since we purchased this vehicle we have had to have the transmission repaired twice as follows:

Not a common problem

I checked the complaints and investigations database at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ (it's part of safercar.gov - the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website). This is not an established problem with 2006 Ford Escapes. As a matter of fact of the handful of reports about powertrains for this vehicle most were not even trans body related - a few shifter problems, mainly.
