I have been shopping around for tires for a month or so now, and not having a pep boys around where I live, but always seeing their commercials on tv, I decided to stop in when I passed one today. I found some tires I liked which were $80 a piece, figured in my head $80x3=$240. So I asked the guy working the counter how much total mounted, balanced, old tire disposal, tax, basically out the door price, he quoted me $460. To get the "free" 4th tire, you need to purchase their road hazard waranty first, then purchase the "free" 4th tire, which is a mail in rebate and said I would get a check in the mail for $80 in a couple months. $460-$80=$380 total. I knew the price would go up once tax and mounting and old tire disposal where added in, but seriously, $140!!! Having been shopping around for a month, $380 is on par with 4 name brand tires out the door(mounted, balanced, ect.), let alone 3+1"free" off-brand pep boy tires. Needless to say, I passed on the tires.

As for service, I have no complaints there. The guy who waited on me was as nice and polite as could be. I just hope to inform someone else out there to shop around some, the 4th tire free seems somewhat of a ripoff to me, seeing that the only reason I stopped in there was because of all their commercials for 4th tire free I saw on tv.

Learn To Play The Game

AUTHOR: John - Memphis (U.S.A.)

The 4-For-3 is an old sales tactic used by the marginal players. Generally what they do is sell you the 3 tires for full list price then pretend the free 4th tire is a real bargain. You have to realize that car tires are a pure commodity item that also have a healthy profit margin on them. Always haggle for the best deal, period. if you have reference prices from Tirerack you're in a much better position to get a decent deal. Always ask what the walkaway price will be as that eliminates games with shop fees, disposal fees and such. Dealers have a lot of flexibility with adjusting the various costs, especially the road-hazard warranty. If they try pushing an alignment job offer to pay half for it. They'll still make money.

Well said

Couldn't agree with you more John. I'll admit, the "4th tire free" ads did their job and got me in the door, just like their supposed too. The purpose of writing this was, as we both stated, to hopefully get people to shop around some.

Once again, nothing against the service at the store I went to, the guy was very helpful. Just that the "4th tire free" was far from it after all the add-ons and around the same price as local tire places I have been to pricing tires.
