In late March 2005 I rented a car from Payless Car Rental near the airport in Kansas City. I don't rent cars often and was told by the renting agent that I should get the gas coverage so that whatever gas (not necessarily the whole tank) was needed to fill the car up would be charged at a significantly "lower rate" than the prevailing gas prices in the area. I foolishly agreed to this, not knowing what a total ripoff this was going to be. When I returned the car full of gas (because the area gas prices were even lower than the supposedly "lower rate" I was quoted), I was denied a refund of that charge, which was about $30.00. I called the manager and was denied a refund, and I called a company representative and was also denied the refund. Needless to say, I will never, ever have any further dealings with the Payless Car Rental corporation. I also filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Lost at the Counter

AUTHOR: Jim - Chicago (U.S.A.)

Kevin,

Sorry to hear of your misfortune with a car rental company. When arriving to any car rental counters can give you an uneasy feeling after you feel you have been taken advatage of at one time. My suggestion is to know everything about your bill before leaving the premesis. I have rented cars all over the country while traveling for business and I have found that every counter I come to may have different policies. I suggest for your future encounters with rental cars agencies, you need to read and ask their policies at the time of renting your vehicle. Speaking of a car rental in Kansas City, Thrifty, Puts the prepurchase fuel option on every contact and you must ask for them to remove it. I have rented from Payless in Kansas City a couple of times and have had no trouble except you have to call to be picked up. I never take Hertzs' prepurchase on fuel (its a true ripoff). Enterprise states their prices right at the counter. Avis is the company we have an account with for our travel business.

I have found, once you sign on your initial contract, you are stating that you agree to the terms of the rental. It is very tough to negociate something you have agreed upon.

When listening to other people with disagreements about their car rental, it usually has to do with a car not running correctly, a dirty vechicle, or a disagrement on the fuel.

I see you rented in March 2005, and you are just now in Dec 2005 sending a report. The Attorney General can not do nothing for you. Payless has a contract that you signed and agreed to and you will be held to the responsibilty of the contract.

Just remember, next time you rent a car, just read on the details, on whomever you rent from.
