Cottman Transmission Ripoff! Crooked, never fixed transmission properly! Had strange vibration but was told everything was fine. They LIED! Germantown Maryland

So my tranny died. I found Cottman Transmission in the paper and decided to give them a shot. Met Wade, the owner of the shop, and he made us feel very comfortable about the job. BTW, my car is a 1990 BMW 535i, automatic, with at the time 213,036 miles. The car would go in reverse, but not into any of the forward drive gears.

Before the car's transmission died, the car drove very smoothly with no odd sounds or anything. Shifts would be slightly rough, but not too bad. After waiting about 17 days in their shop, the car was finally done. Needless to say, I was excited.

I took the car out and first noticed its roughness at idle. That wasn't there before we took it in the shop. I gave it a rev, sure enough, it sounded like something below the car knocking and created vibration. I went back and asked Wade about it, and he said the tranny was fine.

His exact words, "that thing is bulletproof, you can drive it as hard as you want and itll hold up just fine". I was a bit skeptical about it, but took his word for it. I believed him. Biggest mistake of my life.

Sure enough, I tried to investigate the vibration and noises. Replaced the guibo, driveshaft mounts, and still nothing but vibration. Most mechanics I took it to were stumped. I had this great thing called a warranty, which was for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever came first.

Well, I never exceeded that 12,000 mile limit, however, I did exceed the 12 month period by a measly 2 months. And that is when the tranny went completely dead. Same symptoms as last time. How nice of this to happen just as the warranty is up. Now here comes my dillema.

I call up Cottman to find that they went out of business. The nearest shop, in Sterling, VA, say they will check it out for free, but thats about it. I can say goodbye to that $4000 I put into my car a little over a year ago.

I was lied to, and ripped off. I dont know what else I can do to resolve this matter. Now I am out of a car, and dont have the money to repair it, or but a new one. Thanks a lot Cottman Transmission.

beware next time and stand your ground!!

A lot of times vibrations after overhaul can be caused by reinstalling the transmission with a new torque converter,bending the flywheel,or a unbalanced torque converter.If they really new what they were doing,they should have unbolted the torque converter and then started the vehicle.Vibration gone=torque converter, vibration still there= bent flywheel,look at your diagnosis, the original repair report order when the car was brought in, next time stand your ground and make them fix it!Alot of shops get busy and don't take the time to do there job properly, also let your next mechanic know of all the problems your having, so they can be in a better position to get you back on the road with all problems fixed!And remember anybody that has to advertise a 69$ free check on tv has to be hurting for business because when they do their free check they won't give you a price, we'll ask them if your better,faster,and more trained and cheaper than the dealer the dealer can give me a price, why can't You!!

Sterling VA Cottman not at fault here

I am the owner of the Sterling VA Cottman center which closed in July of 2008. In 15 years, after dealing with thousands of customers, I had maybe a handful of legitimate complaints, most of which were resolved. I am sorry you had a bad experience with the Germantown Cottman, but we are all individually owned and operated, so guilty by association shouldn't fly here. By you own admission you were 2 months out of warranty and I didn't see a dime of that $4000.00 you said you paid for transmission repair. I thought my offer to look at your car for free was pretty reasonable considering the circumstances. Maybe BMW will check it for free for you. I know this is ancient history but I just wanted to clear my shops name.

I do understand your frustration, but I just had a warranty company deny a claim for repairs because it was 16 miles out of warranty. My offer to check it for free is still open by the way, if you still have the car.
