On May 23 2005, I had a local Pep Boys Auto repair my leaking oil pan gasket on my Nissan 240SX. After being charged $324.69, I brought my car home and the next morning found a bigger puddle of oil on my garage floor than before I brought it in for repair.

I put the car up on my ramps to see what was leaking and found the leak was coming directly from the gasket of the oil pan. In addition, the cork gasket was sticking out in 3 places, and one part of the cork sticking out near a screw was actually broken. They had not seated the gasket properly causing the leak.

I brought it back and told their manager, Carlton Davis, of the problems. They put my car up on their lift, and in 10 minutes told me the leak was fixed. I asked to see their work because I know to properly fix this takes a few hours. At this point, I knew this was not a reputable and honest business.

When I saw the oil pan gasket, the loose cork in 3 places was gone. They had cut off the parts that were sticking out with a blade. I pointed this out to them and they said that they did not do that and that's the way it was. But assured me they tightened all necesary screws to prevent further leaks. Hesitantly, I brought the car home and the next morning found a new puddle of oil on my garage floor.

I brought it back a third time and this time they tell me that my oil pan has a microscopic leak and needed to be replaced. They claim the leak was so slow they didn't catch it the first time. They made a "deal" with me that if I paid for the replacement oil pan, they would not charge me for any labor.

I let them know that wasn't a deal expecially when it had only be 3 days since they fixed my oil pan gasket and was still under warranty. Anyway, I went along with their scam even though I suspected there was nothing wrong with the oil pan itself. So after another $149.18, I have a new oil pan with a supposedly non-leaking gasket.

The next morning, there is an even BIGGER puddle of oil on my garage floor. In theory I know I should bring my car back to them to really fix it right, but who knows what other problems they will make up to charge me more money. And I'm not even sure they can really fix a relatively simple job like an oil pan gasket.

To really rub salt into my wounds, after I paid for the oil pan, the manager Carlton Davis, asked me to call their 800 line and give them a good rating for doing me this "favor" for me. Then his supervisor who was ringing me up asked me to rate their service from 1 - 10.

Pep Boys rip-off - Part 2 - I have no faith in their mechanical abilities

AUTHOR: Erwin - Denver (U.S.A.)

I got a call from a regional manager, Kevin Puchelli, after I posted my complaint to Pep Boy's customer service section web site, who apologizes and says he will help make things right. Kevin tells me his master trainer, James happens to be in town and can take a look at the problem. We agree to have James look at my car at a different store in Aurora Colorado, since the original store at 7205 E. Evans, Denver, CO couldn't diagnose the problem. I had to leave my car over night since they claim they could not see any leaks in only a few hours. Then the next day, I had to keep calling them to get a diagnosis on my leak. Finally after 4 attempts, I speak to a supervisor Jose who tells me the leak is from the "rear main seal". It's a seal that connects the engine to the transmission. Estimated cost, over $500. Since the job is large and complicated, and I have no faith in their mechanical abilities, I choose to take my Nissan to a Burt Toyota dealership. My wife uses them for her Toyota Corolla and have been very satisfied. They work on non-Toyota cars as well. I ask them to diagnose a leak in my car and make no mention of what has happened at Pep Boys. Within 2 hours they call me back and say I have 2 leaks in my front crank seal, and vale cover gasket. Cost would be $314.56. I had Burt Toyota make the repairs, got a rental car for free while they are fixing my Nissan, and before the end of the day, it is done. And guess what? All leaks are now completely gone even after 1 week of driving the car.

So, to sum things up, Pep Boys either doesn't have any qualified mechanics, even their training mechanic couldn't diagnose the leak correctly, or they know exactly what they are doing and are just a bunch of rip-off artists. It's probably a combination of both. The only thing they did right was refund my $285 in labor cost and were courteous. Otherwise, it is an absolute waste of time and money and a huge headache to use PepBoys. Two VERY BIG thumbs down for them.

oil pan gasket, the customer no idea of what he is talking about

AUTHOR: Armetra - East Providence (U.S.A.)

I would just like to say i am a employee of pepboys in Seekonk Ma. My reply to this compliant is as followed the customer above has no idea of what he is talking about the oil pan gasket on a 240 takes about 30 mins to change and was most likly repaired the right way the first time. He said he noticed a larger oil puddle under his car the next day that may be true but let me tell you why. If in fact his oil pan gasket was faulty to begin with his car would have been lacking oil pressure when he came in to get it fixed his oil pressure returned to what is should of been and depending on the miles of the said car his main seal with the added oil pressure failed. Im tired of all the non mechanics bashing pep boys most of you have no idea about cars and just like to say we messed up just because you are cheap. If you think we are ripping you off go to school get your ase certs and work on your own cars. What most people fail to realize is that every part of your car effects another part they are all linked in some way or another so when one thing fails it time to replace more than one.

The oil pan gasket has NOTHING to do with making oil pressure on any car. It is a gasket that simply seals the pan to the block. Since YOU have no idea what you are talking about, please be quiet.

It's people like you, mechanic wannabes, that make life harder for those of us who are mechanics.
