Sears Auto Center attempts to ripoff out of town consumer for $1200 brake job on a 45 second fix Manchester New Hampshire

My wife entered the Sears automotive, at my request, to see if they could bleed the brakes properly on my 94 Chevy Suburban. Two days before I had to change the wheel cylinder and could not get the rear brakes adjusted properly.

I received a phone call from Sears saying the news was not good. Repairs to the brakes on the vehicle were going to cost me up to $1200. The rear shoes needed to be replaced, as well as the rear drums replaced because they did not mic out enough to be turned. Both sides! Also the front rotors were scored "so bad" they had to be replaced as well as the front pads! I almost forgot to mention the rear axle seals were "leaking" and had to be reconditioned. (The result of bleeding the brakes two days earlier!) Estimate total- $933.77

An after thought to the estimate hand written was a Master cylinder for $228.53 more. The labor for this was not written in. I had the master cylinder replaced app. 1 year ago!

I took the vehicle this morning to my regular mechanic and he found the problem in about 45 seconds. I had put the spring at the slack adjuster in backwards and it was binding. For $20 the problem was fixed.

I made all the necessary phone calls starting with the auto center manager up to the National Customer Relations Advocate and was told they were not going to do anything about it!
