I worked in the Automotive Service Industry for almost 10 years now. I started at a Tire/Lube Center very similar to Sears Automotive.
All cars that came in would go through a 24 Point Inspection. Whether it was for an Oil change Or for tires. Thus the reason why they check under the hood. They refer to this as a courteosy check. Which it is. But its also part of the Service Industry.
Their Courtesy checks like everywhere else should be listed on your Work Order and you should not be charged. As its part of the service you entitled. Most common its a Fluid Check, filters, belts, hoses, wipers. Tire Tread/Pressure check. Undercar check of exhaust, Suspension, or any noticeable leaks.
Sears or any other Tire and Lube Center would in no way benefit from destroying your vehicle. As they don't specialize in any kind of engine, trans, or overhaul work.
And Yes part of the 24 Pt Inspection is in hope to Upsell service. based off of service requirement. In example I do a Oil/Filter Change on your vehicle. I notice it has a very old battery, I mention that to you in hopes you purchase a new battery If not oh well. I INFORMED YOU. So that 2 weeks down the road if your car dosen't start and a tech from another shop or your regular mechanic says Your battery is old and ran out of life. You don't turn around and say, I just had my car at Whoevers Lube Center and they didn't even mention it. I couldve had this done and wouldn't be worried about the breakdown.
Now however if you had an Oil Change Performed and two days later the vehicle is seized. I would be more concerned as to whether or not they added oil to the system. But In now way will a Auto Center that performs maintenance work make any kind of profit off of blowing up cars.
