Pep Boys charged to replace a tire with less than 11,000 miles because it had a bubble on the side North Brunswick New Jersey

Pep boys charge full price to replace a tire which was purchase from them less than a year ago. The Tire had 11,000 miles on it and had developed a bubble in the side wall. I was advised that for the tire to fall under warranty, I would have had to PURCHASED the road hazard warranty. Factory warranty does not apply. Since the bubble could have come from hitting a pot hole. There was no indication on the tire or rim to support that statement.

This is the second problem I have encountered with pep boys and tires. The first was the buy 4 tires and get the 4th one free. I will never deal with pep boys again when it comes to car repair.

Pep Boys seems to offer poor service, you take your car for repair and spend half a day waiting and bad customer satisfaction, you show their managment problems that occur with their products/service and they seem to have the attitude "Oh Well", nothing can be done.

No wonder Manny, Moe and Jack no longer as associated with Pep Boys.

-Road Hazard Warranty is there to cover your tires against flats and dammage beyond repair. With the one time Road Hazard charge all of your flats are repaird for free at any Pep Boys and if your tire is dammaged beyond repair (such as a blow out or bubble) the tire is prorated and you will recieve a new one. So if you had purchased the warranty with only 11k miles on the tires you would only have had to pay the prorated price.

A bubble in the side wall comes from a broken steel belt causing the air inside the tire to push the rubber out forming a bubble that is a weak spot in the tire which can blow out at any time. It is caused by truama to the side wall such as hitting a pot hole or curb. The rim does not always sustain dammage.

The buy 3 tires get one free program works as follows....
-Pay for all 4 tires up front and recive a mail in rebate for the cost of 1 of the tires
-Road Hazard Warranty must be purchased on all of the tires

Sidewall trauma is NOT the sole reason that a tire can develop a bubble, and Carguy KNOWS it. Having worked at PBY as well, even though I am surely no mechanic or tire scholar, I know how these things are made. (Just watch "How Its Made" on tv!)

Defects in the steel belt can also cause this. What SHOULD have been done is a "Pro-rate" on the defective tire, based upon either mileage or treadwear. The road hazard warranty has NOTHING AT ALL to do with this, despite what that location is telling you. Their system (ShopEx) has the capability to do these types of exchanges for tire warranty.

"Carguy" can go get tied. This customer was NOT taken care of properly. You know it and I know it. Stop with the standard excuses.
