My daughter needed her oil changed and could not wait for me to do it. She took it to Tires Plus against my advice. She is a fanatic about getting her oil changed on time. Four days later, I noticed a large puddle of oil. I took it to my machnic to have checked. He told me there was too much oil, over a quart, and went on to say it had damaged the cam seal at a cost of about $500. He asked if I had it changed recently. I told him yes and where I had it done. They proceded to fix it.

I called TP and was told they would not pay unless I had it towed to them (free) and his mechanic would do it free. His statement "Why would I pay to have someone do it when my mechanic can do it for free?" My mechanic was already fixing the problem and is extremely dependable.

I went in and argued. At least they agreed to pay half since I was having the timing belt replaced and he would have a check ready for me the following Monday or Tuesday and he would contact me. Needless to say, he is gone for the day and did not contact me as of end of day Tuesday.

Forgotten details

AUTHOR: James - Lino Lakes (U.S.A.)

A couple of details I forgot. I thought it strange that they did not say anything was wrong because I looked at the serpentin belt after noticing the oil on the ground and it had a large cut (just more than 1/8 inch in it). Other than the cut, there was no wear on the belt. My daughter drives just over an hour to get to college. They also did not place the sticker for the next oil change. Coincidence?

This is the biggest crock yet

"I noticed a large puddle of oil. I took it to my machnic to have checked. He told me there was too much oil, over a quart, and went on to say it had damaged the cam seal..."

Okay, so somehow oil caused an oil seal to go bad? Too much il caused this to happen?

Not a chance. The cam seal was already bad, and you want someone to pay for the timing belt...which needed replacing anyway. TP knows this, and it's why they will not pay the other guy. Oil does not wear anything out. You ruined any hope of compensation the second another mechanic started working on the engine.

I just wish someone would come up with a new scam. All the old ones are just that...old ones. Every mechanic knows them. Ask your mechanic what's in oil EXACTLY, that causes a seal to wear out. Also, ask him how much oil would be required to fill your engine all the way up to the cam seal. I'll give you a hint...the engine would barely(if at all) run. And, too much oil does NOT increase oil pressure. If anything, it reduces it because the oil will be churned by the crankshaft and get bubbles.

Go ahead...ask your expert. I need another good laugh.
