Horace Miller retrieved my daughter's car from the water, towed it approximately 15 miles and chaged her $355.00. He originally told her $375.00 but when I called him later in the evening he said $355.00. She gave him $360.00, he put it in his pocket without counting it. I advised that he owed her $5.00 and he said oh, I didn't know how much she gave me. I said bad business and you suppose to be a business man.

If she had comprehensive insurance coverage, the insurance company would have declared it totaled. It would then be between the company and Miller what happens to the car. (Look for it at your local Drive Time or JD Byrider lot...)
The obvious lesson is to always set the price before the job starts. Maybe that wasn't possible because she wasn't there and the police ordered the car towed. In that case, most states and localities have a law limiting how much can be charged for invoulntary tow-away. But the money is already gone now, and there's nothing on paper documenting the overcharge.

I am A Tow Truck Business owner myself. I do not know either of the parties involved. People don't realize how much it costs to run a Tow Truck , or emergency vehicle. Or the risk we take in doing our jobs. maybe if they knew all we really went through they wouldn't think that $350. dollars was a lot of money for under water recovery and Tow..lets start by $5.29 a gallon for diesel, $400 to $500 a month for Tow truck Insurance $600 to $1500 a month for payment on truck, maintenance on a large Tow Truck is 5 times that on a average vehicle, paying an employee, his insurance and comp, and the best for last We put our life on the line to get peoples vehicles out of traffic or out of the water or flipped over on the side of the road, we work rain, snow or excruciating heat so i hate when people say we charge too much.
