    ...the right way!
    Corporate Advocacy Program
Went to do taxes on line and used TaxAct. It said TaxAct for free.
for everyone- no restriction.

File Taxes Free. Free to Prepare. Free to Print. Free E file.

Well I did the taxes, and when finished, it said I had to pay by credit card $9.95 ! If they took it out of the taxes it woud be an Additional charge of $15.95 ! Now $9.95 is not much, and I did pay it. This is really bad when they say it is totally free! That is truely a rip off!

I thought this false advertising was against the law. Guess you just cann't win anymore!

Free version is free

AUTHOR: BravoGolfSierra - (United States of America)

The free version is completely free, I you choose to upgrade to a version that is not free it is nobody's fault but their own.  You need to take responsibility for your own actions.  Even if you upgraded on accident you need to pony up, its not the company's fault for your mistake.

TaxACT Pricing

AUTHOR: Greg hollingsworth - Cedar Rapids (U.S.A.)

Sunshine,

First off, I want to apologize for the initial response to your report, I have no way of verifying that it was post by an employee at TaxACT, but I would hope that it wasn't.

Second, I can personally guarantee that the TaxACT Free Federal edition is in fact completely free. Anyone, regardless of age or income, can prepare, print and e-file their federal return with the TaxACT Free Federal edition at no cost.

Third, if you were charged $9.95 it indicates that at some point during the preparation of your return you upgraded to the Deluxe version of our product (which is $9.95). There are many points in the return where this could have happened (import of information from a tax return prepared with TaxACT last year, the life events section of the preparation, etc...).

Lastly, the $15.95 charge to have the preparation fees deducted from your refund is not charged by TaxACT, it is charge by Republic Bank, a third party that we (and many other tax preparation companies) contract with to provide this service.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

$15.95 Bank Charge to Deduct a $9.95 payment ???

AUTHOR: small45 - Merrick (USA)

I've used taxact.com for 2 years and have no complaints, but the fact that the bank you contracted to do business for you charges $15.95 to deduct $9.95 from refunds to pay $9.95 to taxact.com is taxact's fault.  If they want their customers to be unhappy, that will do it.  How about contracting with a bank that doesn't charge anything for this service, or one that will charge $1.00?  Why does taxact act as if what their bank does is not their fault?  It's their bank, and it's their fault that it's their bank.
