Like many of the other reporters, I have just discovered an unauthorized check charged against my account in the amount of $29.95, processed on Feb. 7, 2011.
The check's image is completely different from my real checks, its amount and "pay to the order of" are typed, it has my correct name and account number, but incorrect address, and it states on the bottom right "No signature required."
The money was deposited to Bank of America account number 1xxxxxxx6, routed through BOA 111310346.
I have contacted the 1-866 number for Chase, my bank. The rep immediately processed a credit and put a temporary freeze on my account. Unfortunately, I have to wait until Tuesday (federal holiday Monday) to go to my local branch to close account, open a new one, and transfer automatic payment and direct deposit info. I am also trying to figure out who else to notify.
My automatic payments out of my checking account include a mortgage company (Midland), an insurance company (Liberty Mutual), and my local city newspaper. I also pay my credit card online (i.e., not an automatic transfer).
Based upon the other reporters' information, it is hard to figure out a common denominator. This looks like a sophisticated hacking job, hitting perhaps thousands across the U.S. At least one credit union (E&A) has issued a Risk Alert to its members. All the banks need to get involved!
