I tried to close my account at Capital One at the Bradlee Center branch in Alexandria, VA last Thursday (2/17/11). The teller gave me the remainder of the funds in my checking account, which was about $20 dollars. Since it wasn't enough to pay off the overdraft protection of $25.16, I had to take money out of an external account and then pay it off in cash. I had originally transferred the entire amount of a payment to close the overdraft protection, but by the time my credit union transferred the funds into Capital One, the payoff amount had gone up about 25 dollars!
This was in a matter of days! Anyway, I thought my account was closed. But when I checked over the weekend, they had not credited any amount to payoff the Capital One Overdraft account. I tried calling but the weekend representative was less than helpful, even though I had the receipt right in front of me. I called back the next day and was disconnected. I called again today, explained the situation to the agent.
She said all she showed was that I paid $20.82 toward the overdraft account. When I told her that was the amount left in my account and was given back to me, she said she needed a manager. After about ten minutes of being on hold, I was once again disconnected. Now the account says I still owe $3.44. But I don't owe them anything. They owe ME for this aggravation. This is absolutely the worst bank I've ever encountered. I would have never opened an account with a mega bank - but they bought out our local Chevy Chase Bank.
If you're thinking of opening an account at Capital One - don't!

All that receipt shows is that you made a $25.16 payment to a line of credit. No where on that receipt does it show your balance.
If you are saying that the payment you made for $25.16 only shows up as $20.82 then yes something is wrong. But that would leave you with a balance of $4.34, not $3.44(unless that is just an error in typing). Have you gotten a statement from your Line Of Credit, to see all of the transactions? If not can you go on-line or back to the bank to get one? Perhaps there is something on there you are not aware of. But if everything else is okay and the $25.16 payment really did turn into $20.82 then take the receipt and the statement and go into the branch to get them to correct it.
