I live in Niles Illinois. I made an ATM deposit on 8/18/07 at the Niles (Golf Road) branch (10:53 am). The amount of the deposit was $4,122.00, CASH !. On 8/20/07, via online banking the deposit showed up in my account. So I proceeded to pay my bills, etc. Today, (8/22/07) around (4:30pm) I checked my account online to see if a couple of online (via Chase) credit card payments when through. To my horror it read that under the DEBIT column was a debit of $3700 with the description " DR DUE ATM/DEP ERROR" .

I rushed to the bank and they connected me to someone in their claims office and thus filing a dispute. They stated that the company that collects the ATM deposit envelopes claim that there was only $422 in the envelope not $4,122 . Notice only the one is missing. They gave me temporary credit for the $3700 while the dispute is investigated. Meanwhile, I have to run around tomorrow, withdraw and close my savings account at another bank and replenish the $3700 credit in my account in case the reverse it and take away the credit. I am in hell right now. I feel like I have been mugged by a system and bank that I trust so much and that my family has been going to (when it was Bank of Ravenswood) since the late 60's. I hope this can resolve itself because I am quickly losing trust in this bank. If I was trying to jip the bank why would by depositing $3700 tomorrow to cover their fatal mistake.

Any advice is sorely needed!!!

First piece of advice.

AUTHOR: Robert - Wallingford (U.S.A.)

Make your deposit (especially that amount of cash) with a teller.

Was you claim filed in writing? If it was done over the phone, make sure you follow it up in writing.

Wait to see what the investigation results are. If they should deny your claim, you are entitled to copies of the documents that they used for their investigation.

Good luck.

This has been tried many times and failed

AUTHOR: Dave - Jacksonville (U.S.A.)

It has been proven that there's no way the ATM can accept that much cash. It physically cannot fit in the slot. Also, who in their right mind deposits that much cash in an ATM? Why not wait until the morning and deposit it in person?

When ATM deposits are removed, there are at least 2 people there counting, plus cameras everywhere recording the process, so stealing is impossible. If you really want to pursue this and you really believe that you put that much cash in an envelope, then you need to demand to see the video feed for that morning when the envelopes were open and posted.

However, I say again, so many people have tried this and failed. You think the banks don't know this scam? ATMs have been around for many years, and there have been many people that have said that they put cash in the ATM only to have it dissapear. It won't work.

Chase Bank --Niles Illinois Branch

AUTHOR: Ameirin - Niles (U.S.A.)

I am not a scammer as I have been called by a responder. I have read enough ATM horror stories online to know that these independent companies that services these bank ATM can be bad news. I that regard I am not alone. I was dumb to trust this service but I know that thing will work out. I don't plan saying okay and walking away. I was wronged big time and I am not stopping until I am heard.

Lost money

AUTHOR: Abidose1 - Mansfield (U.S.A.)

I see your problem and frankly am a little confused. Why would you deposit that type of cash into an ATM? Understand as a previous poster stated, fraud is very big with ATM machines. So much so that some companies are working on ATM's that actually scan your deposit to confirm the validity of it. As far as the Banks involvement..... They merely take what the processing company tells them. Banks don't service them or empty them. Most large banks are serviced by upstanding bonded companies like Brinks, or Loomis Fargo. If in fact you did make that deposit, then it will be corrected, but understand, it might take some time.

#5 Consumer Suggestion

Hey How are you doing this is in regards on the $4,122.00

AUTHOR: Rene - Chicago (U.S.A.)

Hey How are you doing this is in regards on the $4,122.00 Yea I see that they keep telling you that no one puts to much money in a ATM but we all make mistakes. Why because we trust in that company. I am a computer Operator and I repair computers. to and people look at computers like they were so smart no they are not Computers are operated by Humans and Mistakes are made or someone though it would be easy to take that money. I think its not fair that someone takes what you work so hard for, If i were you wait too see what happends in the Investigation. and if they tell you that you have to return that Money Back contact The Better Business Bureu,

#6 Update By Author

Vindicated

AUTHOR: Ameirin - Niles (U.S.A.)

Approximately 4 weeks after the nightmare took place, I received a letter from Chase. The letter reported that the transaction was processed incorrectly and/or unauthorized, thus temporary funds the bank established while the investigation occurred were made permanent. In other words, I won may claim. Two weeks after I received the letter, I closed my 10 year account with Chase. I vowed never to use an ATM again, and opened an account with a local family owned bank that has been around for 50 year.
