Yesterday was my first experience with Key Bank and it will be my last. My wife was given a check drawn on a Key Bank business account and we felt it a good idea to cash it at Key Bank to avoid any wait our bank may place on it and to have the cash on hand.

We were shocked to be told by the teller that since we did not bank with Key Bank, there was a $5.00 charge to cash a check drawn an account held by their bank! She told us it was standard at all banks, which isn't necessarily so as I have been cashing checks drawn on other banks for years at no charge!

To top that off, when I asked for a receipt for the transaction, I was told they were unable to print any, but would try to hand write one! What bank doesn't give receipts for any transactions?

With all the troubles the banking industry is experiencing, you would think they would want to attract new customers, not drive them away.

Rest assured Key Bank will not be getting any more of my business.

It is becoming standard practice...

AUTHOR: Robert - Irvine (U.S.A.)

It may not be at all banks, but it is common at most major banks. Actually $5 is on the lower side. I have seen check cashing fees anywhere from about $3-$10.

By the way the account holder is their customer, your wife was not and was just there to cash a check. So instead of charging every customer more fees to maintain the account. They charge the people that actually use specific services, such as you cashing a check.

Your wife had a choice, to go to her own bank and cash the check for no fee, cash it as Key Bank, or go to a check cashing place and pay more than $5. If you have your own bank you should ask them if they charge a fee for non-customers to cash a check.

Not A Rip Off

AUTHOR: Jim - Anaheim (U.S.A.)

For more than 20 years, banks charge non-customers a fee for cashing a check, even if the check is drawn on their bank. If you go to any bank, including your own, you'll find all banks do this. Your decision to be hasty and want the cash immediately cost you. But the funny thing here is; you had lots options. For example, (1) you still could have gone to your own bank and cashed the check, (2) you could have gone to any of the banks you CLAIM would charge you no fee for cashing your check.

Aside from the fact the bank has no idea whether the check drawn is good or not, and they lose out if the check is no good, banks are in business to serve their customers, not the people who walk in off the street....

#3 Consumer Suggestion

Bank representative LIED to you.

She lied to you. Here in Buffalo, New York, Key Bank charges $7 when you cash a check with them and you don't have an account with them.
