WHY do people continue to have overdrafts and when it happens just continue to do the same thing. Instead of trying to figure out what they did wrong(and yes almost without exception it is an account holder mistake).
How do I know you didn't do anything..because you stated "somehow this bank...". Even after costing yourself $1000 you have yet to take the time to figure out what is going on. YOU must take responsibility over your account, this includes proper account management.
Since you didn't go into details as to what is going on. I would bet it comes down to a lack of account management. So here are some general things that will defiantly help you, and would apply to any bank.
On-Line banking was never meant to replace a written register. The way transactions are processed and submitted to the bank, it may not be accurate. The only person who knows what you have spent when you spend it is you. The way to keep track of that is to write down every transaction when you make it.
The next thing is find out your banks funds availability policy. Then make sure you never even ATTEMPT to spend the money until it is available. If you think you can "float" transactions..you can't.
Also, find out if you can "opt-out" of the overdraft protection. This is where they will decline your card IF you are overdrawn. It won't guarantee you from becoming overdrawn, but it can minimize the damage if it happens.
Now, unfortunately you will probably have people come here and even though you didn't give any details tell you that you are 100% correct and did nothing wrong. They will say everything you want to hear so you will probably ignore anything else that anybody says. They may even tell you about all of the Class Action Lawsuits that are being filed. However, they won't tell you that the few that went anywhere took years and when they were settled, the members of the class got under $100(most were in the $78 range). So this is unfortunate, as their placating will definitely make you feel better, but it won't keep you from getting these fees if you don't change your management
